Kim Kardashian Reunites With Brody Jenner at Caitlyn Jenner’s Birthday Party
Brody Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner have had their ups and downs, but they're better now.
The Hills alum shared insight into his relationship with his father—who transitioned in 2015—and recalled feeling disconnected from the former Olympian while growing up.
"I'd randomly see him—'him' at the time—you know, here and there,” Brody—whose mom, Linda Thompson, split from Caitlyn when he was a toddler in 1986—shared on Special Forces: World's Toughest Test Jan. 15. “But, mom would tell me that I would write on cards, 'Why doesn't dad call me on my birthday?'"
The 41-year-old said that Caitlyn's new marriage to Kris Jenner—who was already mother to Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Rob Kardashian—and commitment to filming Keeping Up With the Kardashians added to him feeling "a little bit abandoned" by his father.
"I had an incredible mother. Father, Bruce, at the time, wasn't around that much," Brody explained. "They split, and then he met a woman. She had kids as well. The woman that he met ... they had kids together."
Still, the reality star—who shares daughter Honey, 17 months, with fiancée Tiarah "Tia" Blanco—expressed compassion for what Caitlyn was going through on a public platform at the time.
"I will say he was going through his own struggles, transitioning, and it was all that was put on TV," he said, "and there were these moments that we would have that was all filmed, and it just felt very invasive and not very genuine, I would say."
"When I found out that Caitlyn, or Bruce, wanted to be Caitlyn, it was sort of a relief," Brody added. "I think that there were a lot of things that started to make sense, you know, just in my life, about my father, and maybe why he wasn't there all those years."
The former Princes of Malibu star also posited that his inconsistent relationship with his father will make him a "better father" to his own daughter.
"I think not having Bruce around growing up and her doing that transition, it was tough just being her son," he said. "I just had a beautiful little daughter. I'm not living for myself anymore. I'm living for her."
Brody added that he's "gonna do the exact opposite of, as far as being there for her, as my father did for me."
At another point in the Special Forces episode, he reflected a bit more on the idea that he wants to be even more present in Honey's life because of how infrequently he saw his father while growing up.
"When you have kids, you need to accept a little bit of responsibility that the things you do are also going to reflect on them as well," Brody shared. "I think it really has shaped me to do everything different and to really be there and to be present to my little girl."

While their father-son relationship was strained, the duo is on a more positive path now, with Brody revealing that he recently received an apology from Caitlyn.
"Just recently, I got a real, sincere apology," he revealed. "It was the first time in my life that I've ever gotten an apology. You know, I'm sorry for not being there, and honestly, it meant a lot."
