What Terry Dubrow, Heather Dubrow Have Said About "Rainbow of Kids"

RHOC’s Heather Dubrow Reveals Secret to Her and Terry Dubrow’s 29-Year Relationship

It's the sort of convo no parent wants to botch

But plastic surgeon Terry Dubrow swears you don't need to approach the topic of your kids' sexuality with surgical precision.

"Act like there are cameras around and that you're going to be held accountable for the way you act," the reality show vet recommended to fellow parents of LGBTQ+ youth when speaking to E! News last summer. "That immediately removes all of your preconceived douchiness you might have."

And then, quite simply, he continued: "Give your kids a supportive, loving environment. That's the perfect place to start."

And should you need more than that straightforward prescription, well, allow the Botched star and Heather Dubrow, his wife of 27 years, to serve as your guides.

Heather "used to say to me, not complaining, but just that it's unusual that we'd have such a rainbow," he remarked of son Nick, 22, twin sister Max, (who came out as bisexual) 19-year-old Kat (who shared she's gay) and 15-year-old Ace (who identifies as transgender). "And I said, 'We were chosen for it. That's what we're supposed to do with our platform.'"

Safe to say he and The Real Housewives of Orange County star, 57, have fully risen to the occasion.

"If we can change hearts and minds by showing how our version of a normal, supportive family can be, we're in," the 67-year-old explained to E!. "We try to be role models for these conversations, and that's the platform that Heather and I have been chosen to have and to put out there. And we're honored."

Though, admittedly, it's not all that tough for them to show up as unwavering allies for their brood.

"You may have your biases and your preconceived notions, but it ain't about you, it's about them, and they live in a completely different world than you grew up in," he explained of his stance. "We all know the right thing to do. We all know the right way to act with our kids."

Outside of making the move from their O.C. digs up to Beverly Hills because the "rainbow shines brighter up here than it does in Orange County" and partnering with organizations like The Trevor Project and GLAAD, that support looks a lot like just being there.

"They don't know anything but love and support and I'm glad that's true," Heather shared on a 2024 episode of RHOC. "Even though they know there's lots of kids out there that don't have what they have, I'm glad that they just feel normal."

And while she and her husband would certainly love on their kids regardless, the two are acutely aware of the example they're setting.

"The more accepting and supportive we are to them publicly, which is the way we are for sure," Terry acknowledged, "hopefully that sends the message out."

For Heather, part of that is not being afraid to put the squeeze on her kids to share their feelings.

"I came from a family that was very 1950s and no one ever talked about anything and everything was sort of brushed under the rug," she noted to E! News. So she vowed at a young age "that if I were lucky enough to have a family, I would be the opposite of that. And so I have to say I'm proud of them, I'm proud of me, I'm proud of us as a family for having the communication that we have."

And sometimes that means remembering to sit back and listen. As parents, it can be tempting "to talk at our kids and give them our words of wisdom and teach them our lessons," Heather acknowledged to E!. "And the truth is, you learn a lot more by listening and it helps them more to let them speak."

If you'd like to reach her standards, she'd suggest you get a ladder.

"I love my children," Heather told E! of her brood. "They're incredible human beings and I'm so proud of who they're growing up to be."

Check out their journey so far.
