Fast X sees Dom and his crew facing a new villain in Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), a man who wants revenge after his father died while battling Dom and Brian (Paul Walker) in Fast Five. The movie ends with Dom and his son, Brian "Little B" Marcos (Leo Abelo Perry), facing a current of rushing water, with little chance for survival. By the time the final movie arrives, it will have been just under five years since that final moment.
Fast And Furious 11 Release Date
On January 30, 2026, Vin Diesel announced on his Instagram account that Fast and Furious 11 would be titled Fast Forever, and it will hit theaters on March 17, 2028. Diesel also explained the meaning of the Fast Forever title. In the post, he wrote, "No one said the road would be easy... but it's ours. One that has defined us and become our legacy... And a legacy... lasts Forever." The photo included a shot of Dom and Brian, as Diesel paid homage to Paul Walker with the announcement.
Louis Leterrier (Fast X) returns to direct the finale. Leterrier replaced Justin Lin for Fast X, after Lin directed the five previous movies in the franchise. There have been 11 movies in the franchise, including the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Leterrier is only the second director to direct more than one film.
One problem with the movie's delay and filming start is that the script has gone through several different writers. Leterrier had previously said he was going to start production on the movie in 2024, and Universal set it up for an April 2025 release, but neither of those things happened. In March, Diesel shared on his Instagram account that Michael Lesslie (Now You See Me: Now You Don't) was contributing to the "polish of the next chapter."
What Will Fast Forever Be About?
With so many changes and rewrites, it is hard to keep up with the storyline. At first, the Dante Reyes story was supposed to continue in a spin-off movie with Dwayne Johnson returning as Luke Hobbs, which was teased in the Fast X post-credits scene. That movie was never made, and there is a chance it never will, meaning that Reyes would need to be part of Fast Forever. As of 2025, the news was that Fast Forever would follow from the cliffhanger ending, and show what happened to Dom and his son, and what their next steps are.
It will also be the last movie in the main series, which means it will likely close the chapter on Dom Toretto in one way or another. This means the returning cast will almost surely include Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez (Letty), Tyrese Gibson (Roman), Ludacris (Tej Parker), Sung Kang (Han), Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey), and possibly Jordana Brewster (Mia). Fast X also teased the return of Gal Gadot (Gisele) and Charlize Theron (Cipher). In an interview with Variety, Jordana Brewster also said that Paul Walker's Brian is returning.
How the final script will turn out, and who will appear in the movie, remains a mystery for several reasons. The movie was announced for April 2025 and pushed back to 2026. It was then teased for April 2027 and then moved to March 17, 2028. Fast X cost upwards of $340 million, and Universal has demanded that the budget be cut, even if that means limiting or removing cast members.
After years of questions, Variety reports that Vin Diesel showed up at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2026, for a 25th anniversary midnight screening of The Fast and the Furious with other cast members by his side. This included Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Paul Walker's daughter, Meadow Walker, producer Neal H. Moritz, and NBCUniversal chairwoman Donna Langley.
This brought the team together in a way like no other since Fast X was released. Diesel himself was wearing a diamond-encrusted blazer with the Fast Forever logo on the back. In the same article, it was noted that Diesel also showed up at the NBCUniversal upfronts on May 11, 2026, and said that four Fast & Furious shows were coming to Peacock.
"For the last decade, we have realized that the fans have wanted more. They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories… And I had to wait till it was right."
Of the four shows, only one is in active development. However, as for Fast Forever, other than the release date, there is still information up in the air, thanks to the fact that the script is still being "polished" at this time. However, thanks to Diesel's recent announcements, the Peacock upfronts, and the Cannes appearance, it sounds like the 2028 release date might finally be locked in.
