Westworld is finally returning.

Now, Deadline reports that Westworld is getting a new reboot after its cancellation at HBO. Screenwriter David Koepp will revisit the 1973 film directed by Crichton, adapting another hit sci-fi franchise created by him after having penned multiple Jurassic Park movies, with the most recent being 2025's Jurassic Park Rebirth, which started a new chapter in the franchise with Scarlett Johansson as its lead. Koepp's new Westworld movie is being made by Warner Bros. Discovery, who tapped into the franchise for the 2016 Westworld series on HBO. After the sci-fi series' cancellation, the update marks a surprising turn of events.

James Marsden and Evan Rachel Wood in Westworld

At this time, no details have been revealed about the new Westworld movie's story or whether it will have any connection to the popular HBO series, though a prominent director is said to be circling the film. Koepp's next major release will be another complex sci-fi project that could give viewers an idea of what to expect from Warner's Westworld movie. Koepp penned the script for Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg's new alien movie that will be released in theaters on June 12. The project sees the Jurassic Park creative duo reunite for a major genre release years later.

HBO's Westworld series became an instant global hit. With a star-studded cast that included names like Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, Thandiwe Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and many more, the sci-fi Western series went on to achieve a near-perfect 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes in season 1, and a high 87% audience score. While the show's reception would fluctuate throughout its four-season run, Westworld still stands tall to this day with a strong 80% critics' score and a solid 75% score from viewers for all seasons of the drama series. Westworld's cancellation in 2022 was surprising.

Despite faltering in later seasons, the show had clearly set up in Westworld's season 4 finale a fifth and final season that would bring its events full circle. Creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy entered negotiations for season 5 to happen, but it was not in the cards. Now, a new version of Westworld is set to rise in theaters after Wood's Dolores gained sentience in the HBO series and started to change the world. It remains to be seen exactly what Warner's Westworld movie will entail, though the fact that Koepp is attached to it is an exciting sign.
