Zach Moser has been writing for ScreenRant since 2022, covering movies, classic TV, and streaming TV. His areas of expertise cover a wide range of genres with a particular interest in horror and drama, and the conversations around the TV and film industry. When he's not covering the latest film releases or chronicling the latest season of a new show, he's writing humor pieces for McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slackjaw, and Points In Case or working on short stories and his second novel.

Wednesday is missing one key member of the Addams Family, but if this character does appear, it could provide the perfect opportunity to reunite Tim Burton and his former muse, Johnny Depp. Wednesday season 3 is still a ways off, but at least we know it's still in production.

All the time in between seasons 2 and 3 of Netflix's fantasy horror comedy has allowed ample opportunity for speculation, with one of the biggest questions being about the status of a critical character in the Addams Family, Cousin Itt. Cousin Itt was developed for the 1964 series and was not part of cartoonist Charles Addams' original The Addams Family comic.

Cousin Itt is a small, child-sized creature made up entirely of floor-length hair. He usually wears a bowler hat and sunglasses and speaks in a high-pitched voice that's unintelligible to anyone but the members of the Addams Family. As Gomez Addams' cousin, Cousin Itt has his own small quarters in the Addams Family home.

Despite his speech style and appearance, Cousin Itt is astute and well-learned, and believes himself capable of many careers and roles that he has no business attempting. If he does appear in Wednesday season 3, just about anyone could voice the character; it's not as if they actually need to appear on camera.

It would be a great opportunity for Depp to return to Burton's orbit. Depp, who has starred in eight Burton movies, has not worked with the director in any significant way since 2012's Dark Shadows. Burton, who is an EP on the series and has directed several episodes, could probably easily get the actor to sign on if he had the mind to.

Johnny Depp Should Voice Cousin Itt In Wednesday

It would be hilarious if Johnny Depp showed up to voice Cousin Itt. It would be similar to Vin Diesel providing the voice for Groot or Cate Blanchett providing the voice for the monkey Spazzatura, in Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. He could just do the high-pitched gibberish as an Easter Egg for people who stick around for the credits.

Depp is still consistently working, and this is the exact type of role that he often takes on. He's had small, self-referential roles in 21 Jump Street, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Life's Too Short; voicing the strange creature, Cousin Itt, feels like it would be right in his wheelhouse.

Depp and Burton have always had a great relationship as well, and it's not as if the pair had a falling out. Burton is just not nearly as prolific as he once was, and the movies he has directed aren't really suited for Depp. Wednesday could be the perfect chance to get them back together.

Johnny Depp Would Be Meeting His (Sort Of) Replacement In Wednesday

This would also be a great opportunity for Burton's two "understudies" to meet in some production. Depp was Burton's go-to in the 1990s and 2000s, but in the 2020s, he appears to be leaning on Jenna Ortega, casting her in the main role of the highly anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

The pair appearing on-screen would tie together Burton's career, in a smaller version of how Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro appearing in Killers of the Flower Moon tied together Martin Scorsese's career. Wednesday may not have the same prestige as that film, but Depp and Ortega's pairing would give the proceedings a little more flavor.
