Build Quality
First of all, I have to take a moment to applaud Huawei for going with such a daring color design approach. Other than the distinctive triangle camera bump that makes it instantly recognizable as a Pura device the moment you see the back. The Pura 90s Pro Max now comes in 4 different vivid and expressive colors inspired from the environment. They are the Blush Gold, Orange Ocean, Graphite Black, and Blaze Purple. What's even more outstanding is that the Orange Ocean option features an industry-first dual-tone gradient mid-frame, where the flat side metal actually continues the color gradient of the back panel. At 230.5 g with a size of 164mm x 77.1mm x 8.1mm, it is undeniably a rather big device, yet remains comfortable enough to hold with all the edges rounded off.
The unit I have here is the Blaze Purple, without the gradient side metal frame. If I am being honest, at first glance, it wasn't my preferred choice right off the bat, but it is one of those aesthetics that takes some time to get used to before you learn to appreciate its beauty. The reflective back finish can also be a fingerprint magnet; choosing a brighter color or keeping the provided transparent case on can help to reduce it.
The camera module does have a significant bump housing all 3 cameras and a color sensor. Personally, I do like how Huawei makes the lens housing a little larger to hide the True-to-Color 2.0 sensor and LiDAR sensor. This cleans up the aesthetic appeal by minimizing the amount of "black holes" at the back of the phone—definitely helps those who have trypophobia. Due to the size of the camera bump, the phone does wobble when placed on a flat surface. Thankfully, it isn't too distracting when you're tapping near the bottom half of the screen. But because of its off-center positioning, that wobble will be accentuated if you press the upper right corner. I would personally prefer the triangular camera bump to be centered just for the sake of balance. However, because the side frames are completely flat, you can actually stand the phone upright on its own—a really practical touch when you need to set up a quick shot.
Flipping it over to the front, you will find a gorgeous 6.9-inch flat-edge display protected by the all-new Huawei Anti-Reflection and Scratch-Resistant Kunlun Glass, which is 16x more scratch resistant and 25x more drop resistant. Feel free to ignore the numbers; it generally means it's stronger, and judging by how Huawei did not ship the phone with any screen protector on means they are rather confident with it too. Surprisingly, despite not having the typical matte surface, the anti-reflection technology does make the viewing experience outdoors noticeably better, whereby Huawei claims up to 70% reduction in sun reflection. Underneath the Kunlun Glass is where you can find the 2880 × 1308 resolution LTPO OLED with 3000 nits peak brightness and up to 120 Hz refresh rate. The bezels surrounding the phone are also remarkably thin, and the screen perfectly follows the rounded corners of the bezel, making the on-screen experience feel incredibly elegant.
If you did not know already, the Pura 90s Pro Max is a traditional bar-shaped smartphone. And from the hardware standpoint, it is about as solid as a device can get since there are no external moving parts. Pair that robust build with both IP69 and IP68 ratings (up to 2 meters of water resistance), and shooting out in harsh or wet environments becomes a complete non-issue at all. Finally, to keep this entire rig running, Huawei has packed in a massive 6000 mAh battery. When you do eventually run it dry, it supports 100 W Wired SuperCharge and 80 W Wireless SuperCharge, ensuring that your downtime is kept to an absolute minimum before you are back out shooting.
Features
As expected from an imaging flagship model, the Pura 90s Pro Max packs some of the best camera features you can get on a smartphone, with the main highlight being the massive improvements to its telephoto module. Powered by an industry-first, high-sensitivity 1/1.28-inch 200MP RYYB sensor, it performs chip-level, real-time 200MP processing, which promises significantly better 20x video quality. Combined with a 4x optical zoom, an f/2.6 aperture, and an industry-leading telephoto macro capability with a 5cm minimum focusing distance, this camera is optimized to deliver exceptional clarity—from extended distances right down to intricate close-up details. Interestingly, Huawei ditched the motorized dual-telephoto prism system, which offers better optical zoom, found on its predecessor, Pura 80 Ultra, for a static, industry-first 3-in-1 ultra lighting prism optical design to save space while keeping light intake high. Honestly, that doesn't bother me; fewer moving parts usually translate to better build quality and durability in the long run. Not to mention, in this way we also get to enjoy a larger-aperture telephoto lens. Image stabilization has also seen a major upgrade, now rated at 7 stops by CIPA standards. Though Huawei did not make it clear if it is entirely optical stabilization or a combination with electronic stabilization as well.
The main camera, on the other hand, features a new 50MP Ultra Lighting HDR 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor equipped with LOFIC technology, OIS, and a 10-step adjustable physical aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0. This setup is designed as a reliable imaging platform, offering precise optical control that simultaneously preserves highlight and shadow details even in complex lighting scenarios—delivering up to 17 stops of high-dynamic video.
Rounding out the optics side of things is a 40MP f/2.2 RYYB ultra-wide camera. Huawei also integrated the True-to-Color 2.0 sensor to ensure all three camera modules consistently deliver industry-leading color accuracy across all photographic scenarios.
Driving all of this hardware is the Kirin 9030S chip. Rather than using the 9030 Pro, they opted for this 5nm silicon because it is highly optimized for image processing. It boasts a 200% improvement in its NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for image understanding and features a dedicated AI color engine. This horsepower is what enables the chip-level, real-time 200MP processing and significantly better 20x video quality.
Before getting into the software, there is a massive caveat to the overall experience: your region dictates what you actually get. If your device runs on the APAC firmware, it will enable every flagship software feature in full—including AI De-Glare, AI Move, AI Composition 3.0, Celia, the Advanced Translation Toolkit, and Data Transfer between iOS and Huawei. However, if you purchase the official EU retail version, you are severely limited. The EU firmware only supports AI Composition 3.0 and the iOS Data Transfer tool. All the other AI features I tested on the APAC unit are completely unavailable for the EU market, which is something you need to be aware of. On the software side, the phone runs the latest EMUI 16. I'll reserve my thoughts on the overall UI, as there are plenty of other people who are more qualified to dissect interface navigation so that we can keep the focus on the photography side of things.
Lastly, with powerful AI now becoming a standard expectation, it is only logical for Huawei to include these software capabilities in the Pura 90s Series. The AI composition tools are designed to help users nail the best frame directly on the device. AI De-glare recognizes various reflection scenarios, allowing you to eliminate glass glare with one tap and keep photos pristine. AI Remove seamlessly erases unwanted objects and background clutter to deliver clean, unobstructed compositions. For group photos, AI Best Expression lets you select the optimal face for each person from multiple shots, ensuring everyone looks perfect in the final image. Finally, AI Move utilizes AI-powered element picking, allowing users to freely drag, scale, and copy subjects to create quick composites or memes with ease.
Real-World User Experience
TL;DR: If you are looking for a flagship smartphone that delivers a great camera experience and massive telephoto performance at an affordable price, the Pura 90s Pro Max is probably the phone for you. It will be difficult to clarify the positioning of this phone, but for those who want the granular details on what it's like to actually shoot with, read on.
Taking the Pura 90s Pro Max out into the field for the first time, I noticed that the colors seem to appear less contrasty and do render slightly more naturally—though it has the tendency to lean towards the warm and green side of things. Despite having a RYYB sensor, the True-to-Color 2.0 is also doing a good job in preserving the natural color tones even in tricky backlit situations, particularly with everyday subjects such as humans, plants, scenery and food. But do be really careful as to not block the color sensor when you are shooting, as it will throw the algorithm off and you might end up with images that have crazy colors.
Through the combination of both the LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology sensor hardware and powerful software processing, the dynamic range is wide enough to consistently deliver images with pleasing highlight and shadow details. In case you are wondering, from the official specification, we are talking about 16-17 stops of dynamic range. Here I do applaud Huawei's XMage processing algorithm, as it does render scenes naturally even with that amount of dynamic range. Whites are whites, blacks are blacks rather than the muddy grays we typically see in "overly tuned" images.
Despite the smart algorithm, I still find that the Pura 90s Pro Max has the tendency to overcompensate in the shadow areas in certain scenarios unless it has a clear read of a true silhouette scene. This can sometimes push the phone into using a higher ISO than required, causing the image to soften a little. Here is a tip for you when dealing with these kinds of backlit scenes. In normal photo mode, you can choose to detach the metering from the focus point and put it at the brightest spot in your image. That way, it will help the phone to neutralize the exposure further. If you would like more control, you can hop over to Pro mode and use the exposure compensation for further tuning. A minor UI quirk to keep in mind: once you detach metering from the focus point, the only way to reset it back to default is to either snap a photo or toggle to another lens and back. Alternatively, for a simpler solution, you could also switch to center-weighted metering in Pro mode in combination with EV controls, as I do find that it yields consistently good results.
Now that you are in the Pro mode, here is the only place you can activate raw mode. But be mindful that Huawei's auto-exposure algorithm is highlight-biased for better highlight preservation, and you have no way of knowing it from the preview. And because raw files bypass the phone's multi-frame HDR image pipeline, shadows in raw files can come out extremely dark and noisy when raised in post-production. You are going to need smart denoising software such as Topaz AI Denoise to recover the files. Thankfully, JPEG files are also automatically generated when you shoot in raw format. Also, the raw files are saved in DNG format, which is widely supported. For general shooting purposes, I would still recommend shooting in JPEG mode utilizing Huawei's JPEG processing pipeline to perform all the heavy lifting.
The telephoto module is where things get interesting. On paper, having a 200MP telephoto sounds like overkill, but in reality, it is how Huawei compensates for its optical limits. Optically, the lens itself is a 4x zoom rather than a native 10x zoom. This was likely a conscious choice for cost, durability, and avoiding lens-switch framing jumps. With digital zoom, you aren't jumping between physical modules when zooming from 4x to 10x, effectively maintaining a smooth zoom transition without dramatic perspective shifts on the tele end. Besides, we also get to enjoy a larger f/2.6 aperture throughout the zoom range.
Despite being a digital crop, the 10x zoom is surprisingly versatile, leveraging the 200MP RYYB sensor and smart processing to produce images that look virtually indistinguishable from optical results. (You can also use the High-Res mode to pump out a single 200-megapixel image with the telephoto camera—just be mindful to keep your camera still.) Here, I do appreciate the real-time processing preview as it can provide you with an accurate look at the final output before you press the shutter. As marketed, you can reach up to 20x natively via digital crop, but the camera UI makes reaching 20x unnecessarily clunky. Since there isn't a direct quick-toggle button on the main viewfinder, you will have to manually drag the zoom slider to reach the native 20x zoom. While the 10x zoom holds up well in bright conditions, I still would not recommend pushing the zoom in low light. The noise reduction algorithm aggressively smears fine details in dark scenes. For a safer option, it is advisable to keep your low-light telephoto shots under 4x for usable images.
Another optical characteristic worth noting is the telephoto's bokeh. Due to the prism optical design, out-of-focus background highlights will render as rectangular bokeh rather than perfect circles. In horizontal framing, this can make busy out-of-focus backgrounds feel slightly "nervous." However, if you shoot vertically, that rectangular bokeh could look intentional, almost like an anamorphic character that can look quite stylized. If we look past these limitations, the Pura 90s Pro Max can produce pleasing out-of-focus areas using the main camera module.
For close-up or macro stuff, I found that there is a mismatch on the official specs. The telephoto macro capability is advertised as having a minimum focusing distance down to 5cm, but in real-world tests, it sits closer to 15cm. Instead, the main camera is the one that actually gets you much closer to 5cm distance. Combining the close focus capability with digital zoom will get you closer than the telephoto lens itself, with the added advantage of using the variable physical aperture blades to control the depth of field as you wish, because by default the main camera will stick to f/2.0. Personally, the only reason you would want to opt for the telephoto lens for macro shots is if you specifically need better magnification, better perspective control, and want to avoid wider-angle distortion.
In terms of focusing, autofocus performance is generally quick to catch onto subjects, though the telephoto module has the tendency to lose its subject tracking once the subject moves away from the original frame. If the subject is small and near to the minimum focus distance, it also tends to prefer focusing on the background instead. A quick tap on the subject is all you need to re-engage the focus. The OIS also does work really well in compensating unintended movements, though it can be a little too eager before you lock onto your subject, pushing the frame slightly away from where you are aiming. Occasionally, you can also see micro-jitters in the video frame when there are massive movements to compensate. Still, thanks to the CIPA 7.0 rated stabilization, I was able to consistently pull off sharp handheld shots at 1/35s shutter speeds at a 240mm equivalent (10x zoom).
The experience of switching between the Pro mode and normal photo mode is seamless and will retain the focal length. However, it will only work with the standard JPG file size. If JPG-L is set, or if you switch into video mode, the focal length resets to the default 1x zoom, probably due to a different binning algorithm. Speaking of the default zoom, there is also no way to set your desired focal length as the default. That would have come in handy for those who preferred a tighter focal length as a starting point. There is also an option in the normal photo mode to save larger 25-megapixel files instead of the standard 12.5-megapixel files, leaving some latitude for post-cropping.
Video quality on the Pura 90s Pro Max is genuinely impressive, with noticeable improvements particularly when recording at longer focal lengths. Surprisingly, pushing the video to 10x zoom still produces stable and highly usable footage even when filming from a moving vehicle, making it a highly reliable video recording device. That said, from a professional videographer's perspective, there are still notable omissions to treat this as a seriously workable device since there is no native 24fps or 25fps option, no Log color profile for external grading, and no support for direct external SSD recording over USB-C.
The AI Composition has been improved to now support pitch/tilt guidance and framing throughout the 1x-10x zoom range across multiple subjects. Honestly, this is such a fantastic learning tool for beginners, but experienced photographers will likely turn it off to retain full creative control over framing. AI De-Glare works wonders cleaning up reflections with one tap when shooting through glass. This is the one feature that I would like to see future improvements on. As of now, it can struggle to detect the real subject when there is complex glare involved. Adding manual glare selection tools would also be great.
Lastly, it is worth touching on endurance. The 6,000 mAh battery provides enough juice to easily last more than half a day of active shooting out in the field. However, be mindful that once you start aggressively scrolling through the gallery and utilizing the on-device AI editing tools, that battery life will shorten noticeably. If you are planning a full day of heavy content creation, just remember to pack a high-wattage power bank to top it up between locations. The phone also gets hot quickly when shooting heavily, which is expected from all the processing that it is doing in real-time.

- Lens consistency: All three cameras maintain a consistent look without jarring color shifts, making switching between lenses easier.
- Anti-glare screen: The Kunlun Glass anti-reflective coating actually works wonders for reviewing images in bright daylight.
- Good AI implementation: The smarter AI composition is a solid framing guide, and AI De-glare works incredibly well for shooting through glass (though I am looking forward to seeing it mature even further with manual controls).
What Could Be Improved
- Bring back the 1-inch sensor: Stepping down to a 1/1.28-inch sensor on the main camera feels like a step backward. I really hope to see the 1-inch sensor return on the next successor, further elevating the native low-light performance.
- A 200MP main sensor: While the telephoto gets the 200MP treatment, putting a 200MP sensor on the main camera would allow for clean digital cropping all the way to 4x or more natively. Plus, since the main module has the physical aperture blades, it would double as an absolutely killer macro camera with genuine depth-of-field control.
- A true photographer's ecosystem: It's probably not in Huawei's design philosophy, but I would love to see dedicated photography-oriented accessories such as an external lens or filter-support casing.
- Haptic Design: Adding a physical side shutter button or a haptic grip for manual setting adjustments would elevate the photographic experience from this phone.
- Pro video features: The video is good, but having native support for 24/25fps options and support for direct SSD recording over USB-C would be great. Including a Log profile will also be a massive bonus.
- Minor UI tweaks: The camera interface needs a faster shortcut for timer settings, better indication of manual and auto settings in Pro mode, and a shortcut to get to 20x zoom (having to drag the zoom slider is unnecessarily clunky).
- An optical 10x zoom: As great as the digital crop is, having a true 10x optical lens natively would allow even further reach.
- Refining telephoto stabilization: While the stabilization is strong, it can sometimes overcompensate at the extreme telephoto end. Also, an improvement in smoothing out those micro-jitters will make things even better.
- Future AI Improvement: Eagerly looking forward to further development on AI De-Glare.
Final Thoughts
Other than having a mouthful of a name to pronounce and not having the "Ultra" moniker on this phone just to differentiate its positioning, the Pura 90s Pro Max still consistently delivers beautiful images. My suspicion is that Huawei tries to keep it relatively accessible with the launch this round. With global memory prices on the rise, they likely chose to lean into vastly improved software processing and different optical designs to save costs and prevent the price from ballooning completely out of control. That explains why you aren't looking at absolute spec-for-spec parity with last year's Ultra.
There will undoubtedly be people scrutinizing the spec sheet, wondering if stepping back from a 1-inch main sensor and skipping a native 10x optical zoom feels like one step forward and two steps back. But having actually shot with it, I can assure you the overall imaging experience hasn't really suffered as much. The differences we are talking about here are minimal, and environmental factors would probably be a larger contributing factor.
If anything, the real danger is getting a bit too overconfident with the zoom just because it looks so good on the phone screen. Just a word of warning: when you push it too far, that aggressive noise reduction will kick in and smear your fine details. Use the extreme telephoto end sparingly, and it will reward you.
