The trailer introduces us to an all-new character, Cielo, who will seemingly be the protagonist of this mode. Set in Vilasapara, a town which apparently revolves around fighting, we watch Cielo hang out with friends, brawl in an arena, and flee from the Chinese mafia.

The game is being developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, best known for its narrative-driven Yakuza action games and RPGs. This connection is very apparent: Crossroads’ trailer is almost entirely devoted to cutscenes with very little traditional fighting game action. There’s a scene that appears to be a chase sequence, and then we finally get the smallest glimpse of the series’ traditional brawling as the camera snaps into the perspective you’d expect in a 3D fighter.

It’s unclear how this new narrative mode will overlap with the characters the series is known for, and if the combatants that appear in the story will be playable in multiplayer matches. That said, Akira Yuki, Pai Chan, and Wolf Hawkfield have already been confirmed for the roster.

It’s been quite a while since the last Virtua Fighter game. While SEGA and RGG Studio released Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage last year, this was a remaster of the most recent installment in the series, which is twenty years old. Virtua Fighter: Crossroads was announced in 2024, when it was revealed that RGG would be taking the reins. Between this game and the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven, the studio is tackling some very ambitious projects at the moment.
