It's been nearly two decades since Virtua Fighter 5 was released, but as teased last month by Sega itself, a new sequel is on the horizon. At The Game Awards, Sega debuted the first teaser for Virtua Fighter 6. The publisher also revealed that more info will follow at a Virtua Fighter Direct after the conclusion of The Game Awards.
Yakuza developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios will be tackling the franchise as it starts a new era on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The original Virtua Fighter debuted in arcades in 1993, where it innovated 3D fighting games. It paved the way for other fighting games like Tekken to follow in a similar style.
The previous game in the franchise, Virtua Fighter 5, was originally released in 2006, and it's been remastered a few times, most recently as Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown in 2021. Another remastered edition, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., was announced last month.
Presumably the Virtua Fighter Direct later today will shed more light on when Virtua Fighter 6 will be released, and which characters will be showcased in the game.
