In Virgin River season 7, Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) adapt to life as newlyweds and potential parenthood as an anxious expectant mother asks them to adopt her baby. Elsewhere, Lizzy (Sarah Dugdale) and Denny (Kai Bradbury) prepare for the birth of their own child, while Muriel (Teryl Rothery) undergoes cancer treatment. Of course, the biggest mystery Virgin River season 7 had to solve was Charmaine's (Lauren Hammersley) disappearance in season 6.
In a season 7 clip released by Netflix earlier this week, the show revealed that Charmaine may have been involved in Calvin's (David Cubitt/Josh Blacker) death. Throughout the new season, Detective Mike Valenzuela (Marco Grazzini) leads the investigation, and it seems the town's latest criminal case will bring Mike and Charmaine's stories to an end — for now, at least. Deadline confirms that Grazzini and Hammersley will not return for Virgin River season 8.
Charmaine's ordeal in season 7 provides ample reason for her to take a break from Virgin River and its haunting memories. Meanwhile, Mike's relationship with Jack's sister, Brie (Zibby Allen), also fizzles out in Virgin River season 7, despite the pair working together to find Charmaine. Brie can't seem to stay away from Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth), who experiences his own major cliffhanger in the season 7 finale.
However, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Deadline that both characters could return in (potential) future seasons. Virgin River was officially renewed for a 10-episode eighth season in July 2025. Deadline reports that the rest of season 7's main cast are expected to return in season 8, including Breckenridge, Henderson, Hollingsworth, Allen, Colin Lawrence (Preacher), Tim Matheson (Doc), Annette O'Toole (Hope McCrea), Sarah Dugdale (Lizzie), and more.
"I’m just trying to look at the longevity of the show and making sure that the characters that we’re keeping have enough story engine in them to keep going," Smith explained when asked about the show's cast shakeups.
As for Mike, who finds a new love interest in Virgin River season 7, Smith said that the character "probably will be on the back burner for a little while until we have something we’ve written." The showrunner continued:
"We have so many relationships already that I think a little bit of that was just a sort of happy ending for this chapter for Mike to find his way back to Victoria and to explore what happens there. But I love Marco and could see his character coming back in a more substantive role if the creative is right."
As for Charmaine, who has arguably been Virgin River's favorite punching bag since she was first introduced in season 1, dealing with a seasons-long pregnancy, a compulsive tendency to lie, and a violent, drug-dealing baby daddy, Smith said:
"No plans for Charmaine to be back in season 8, but that’s not to say, when the right time comes, I’d love to bring the character back for something other than more cliffhangers and more lies on pregnancies."
With Charmaine out of the picture, anyone could lead Virgin River's most dramatic storyline next season.
All episodes of Virgin River season 7 are now streaming, only on Netflix.
