Viaplay Content Distribution Returns For ‘Veronika’ Seasons 2 & 3

EXCLUSIVE: Viaplay Content Distribution has boarded Season 2 and 3 of Nordic noir crime thriller Veronika, and will position the SkyShowtime show as a multi-series boxset.

Viaplay was already selling Season 1, but had not officially committed to the following seasons until now. The news comes ahead of the London TV Screenings later this month, where the Sweden-based Viaplay will be offering a bunch of fresh titles for buyers.

We revealed plans for Veronika Season 3 in November last year, while at the same time being first with the news Season 2 would launch on December 8. This marked the first time Paramount- and Comcast-owned SkyShowtime had ordered a third season of an original production. Season 3 will launch this year.

Veronika stars Alexandra Rapaport (Gåsmamman) as troubled and uncompromising police officer Veronika Gren, whose extraordinary ability becomes both a gift and a curse as she is drawn into complex investigations rooted in long-buried secrets. Tobias Santelmann (Exit, Detective Hole) also stars and Bigster is the production company.

The series had made an impact internationally, as Season 1 was licensed across 55 markets. With Seasons 2 and 3 launching across SkyShowtime’s 20 European markets, Viaplay will be looking to extend its reach, and will shop all three as a boxset offering.

Veronika is a standout example of contemporary Nordic noir – bold emotionally rich and driven by complex characters,” said Vanda Rapti, EVP of Viaplay Select & Content Distribution. “The success of season one both on SkyShowtime as well as our Viaplay film and series SVOD in the U.S., and the UK, coupled with content licensing and Viaplay Select distribution of the show reaching 55 markets speaks for itself.

“Seasons two and three raise the stakes even further. Offering the series as a multi-season boxset gives buyers a powerful proposition, and we’re proud to continue our partnership with Bigster and SkyShowtime.”

Calle Jansson, CEO and producer at Bigster, added: “Veronika has proven itself as a series with real international appeal, and the response to season one exceeded our expectations. With Viaplay Content Distribution coming on board for Seasons two and three, we have a strong partner who understands how to position premium Scandinavian drama in the global marketplace.”

Created and written by Katja Juras and Anna Ströman (Gåsmamman) and directed by Mikael Håfström (Evil, Derailed), Veronika is produced by Calle Jansson and Mathias Gruffman at Bigster, with lead actress Rapaport also serving as executive producer. Returning cast includes Arvin Kananian (Triangle of Sadness), Eddie Eriksson Dominguez and Sarah Rhodin, with new cast members Gustav Hammarsten and Hanna Alström joining in season two. Further details on season three will be announced in due course.
