Tracker Season 4's Evolution Confirmed With 1 Major Change

2 hours ago 5

Colter Shaw's story is evolving in Tracker season 4.

Justin Harltey's lone-wolf series was an immediate hit when it premiered in 2024. Impressively, it has been able to maintain its popularity despite the recent competition from Taylor Sheridan's Marshals during the 2025-2026 TV cycle. As Tracker season 3 comes to a close, all eyes are on what's next for Colter and his team, and while plot specifics are still kept under the rocks, the public can expect some major changes.

As promised, the Tracker season 3 finale offers answers about the Shaw family mystery — the original central arc of the series. The death of its patriarch, Ashton, has haunted the clan for years, nearly breaking up the family, particularly Colter's relationship with his older brother, Jensen Ackles' Russell. While that story is done, Tracker has planted plot seeds for season 4, including an explanation of its upcoming production move.

In a new interview with The Wrap, Hartley broke down what solving the Shaw family mystery means for Tracker's future, as well as the series' upcoming relocation from Vancouver to Los Angeles for filming. He explained that people can expect an evolution in the show in light of this change. He also reassures fans that every narrative that will be done moving forward will be rooted in wanting to keep the show fresh and interesting. Read his full quote below:

We have spent the first three years unpacking this story about what happened to Colter’s father — who was involved, who wasn’t involved — and that’s changed throughout the course of the show. First being that Colter thought his brother was involved, because his mother told him as much. Come to find out, that’s not necessarily the case. So all of that kind of comes to a head and we get some answers to all that stuff at the end of season 3. These stories take as long as they take, but when it’s time for a story to come to a head and answer some questions, it’s time. And it became obvious that this was sort of the right time to do this. We’ll come back with something — we already have it, it’s pretty incredible. Honestly, I think it’s our most ambitious season to date, but I think it’s also our richest one, in terms of character and backstory and where we’re taking Colter. In terms of tone and character, I don’t think [the filming location change will] impact the show at all. Our show is a road show. Our character goes from town to town across the United States of America and meets people from all different walks of life and helps them out. These strangers become kind of his family in a way. To be able to shoot in a different place that gives us different landscapes, we’re able to go to places — New York, D.C., the desert, Texas, the beach. It just opens up our world in terms of landscape, which is such a big character of our show. We built a really great, wonderful show and we did it in Vancouver for the first three years. Just, inevitably, as things go, the show has to evolve. We’re not really interested in doing something just for the sake of doing it. I want to push the envelope and I want it to be something different, so we’re excited about it. It’s going to be very good for the show and for the audience.

As announced ahead of its finale, the production for Tracker will be moving from Vancouver, BC to Los Angeles for season 4 thanks to a massive tax break. Admittedly, this may not be as big of a factor for the series, since its backdrop consistently changes because of Colter's job. That said, the Tracker season 3 finale, which establishes Colter's home base, gives additional weight to this upcoming change. With a confirmed permanent home, the procedural's story can settle in one location for a period of time.

For what it's worth, a soft reboot for Tracker season 4 is an exciting direction for the series. While the project has been able to keep the interest of its fan-base for three seasons now, its established formula is also already starting to wear thin. Reinventing itself is the key to a long run, especially for shows on network TV, considering that they tend to be on broadcast for a much longer time compared to its streaming counterparts. Other shows would have significant cast shake-ups or a major death, which come with big risks. Luckily, Tracker's evolution doesn't come with any of those.

Tracker season 4 is confirmed to return to its usual 9 PM ET on Sunday timeslot, as CBS's complete fall 2026 schedule revealed that the network is maintaining its tandem with Marshals. At this point, there are no expected cast exits for the project — at least for characters who are deemed regulars, which is great for continuity.
