The former Giorgio Armani model who was pals with Andy Warhol in New York City had his breakout film role in 1981's So Fine.
His best known parts were in the 1983 comedy film Losin' It as Spider opposite Tom Cruise. Later that year he played Dennis Guilder in the successful John Carpenter horror film Christine, about a 1958 Plymouth Fury that kills people.
In 1985 he starred in My Science Project as Michael Harlan and had a part in City Limits. The Texas native also was in the 1985 TV mini-series North And South.
His biggest blockbuster came when he worked with Cruise again, this time in the 1986 film Top Gun where he played one of the handsome pilots.

Then he directed Blue Crush (2002) with Kate Bosworth and Into the Blue (2005) with Jessica Alba.
As far as his love life, the star briefly dated Mick Jagger's ex-wife Bianca Jagger in the 1980s
