The best horror TV shows of all time have a bit of everything: comedy, sci-fi, fantasy, supernatural, and more, ensuring that there’s a horror TV show for all tastes. While some horror shows crossed boundaries and are too scary to be rewatched, others are worth rewatching thanks to their quality, scare factor, creativity, complexity, and tone.
Hannibal
Three Seasons
Hannibal is a psychological horror thriller TV show based on the characters from Thomas Harris’ novels Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising. As such, Hannibal follows FBI special investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), who is assigned to investigate a serial killer. When the case weighs heavily on Will, his superiors decide to have him supervised by Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a forensic psychiatrist.
However, Lecter is also a serial killer and a cannibal, and though he initially agrees to help so he can manipulate the FBI from within, he grows fascinated by Will’s abilities, and they build a strong bond. Hannibal is packed with foreshadowing and subtle clues that invite the audience to rewatch immediately after finishing the show.
American Horror Story
Preparing Its 13th Season
American Horror Story is an anthology horror series, where every season is a different story, horror theme, and cast, though the show has a long list of frequent collaborators. In 12 seasons so far, American Horror Story has explored themes like haunted houses, covens, freak shows, cults, cursed hotels, vampires, and more, sometimes more than once.
While not all of American Horror Story’s seasons have been good, there are some great seasons that are worth rewatching. Season 2, Asylum, is widely considered the show’s best and scariest, with honorable mentions to season 3 Coven, season 5 Hotel, season 7 Cult, and season 8 Apocalypse, the latter a crossover season.
Ash vs. Evil Dead
Three Seasons
Ash vs. Evil Dead is a comedy horror TV show and part of the Evil Dead franchise. As such, it’s set years after the chaotic events of Army of Darkness, and it reunites viewers with Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), the chaotic survivor of the original Evil Dead trilogy. Ash now works as a stock boy, but he’s forced to leave his peaceful, though mundane, lifestyle when the evil dead is unleashed again.
Ash vs. Evil Dead brings back the comedy from the second and third Evil Dead movies, but without forgetting the horrors of the Deadites and the title evil dead. The show also expands on the Evil Dead universe and Ash’s story, and it’s a very fun watch that doesn’t get old on a rewatch.
Being Human
Five Seasons (UK), Four Seasons (US)
Being Human is a British supernatural horror series that follows vampire John Mitchell (Aidan Turner) and werewolf George Sands (Russell Tovey), best friends, colleagues, and roommates who move into a new place. There, they get a new roommate: Annie (Lenora Crichlow), who died in that house and is now a ghost.
Together, they do their best to live their lives as normally as possible, while holding on to what’s left of their humanity and struggling to cope with their individual “conditions.” Being Human mixes drama, supernatural elements, and horror, and it got an American remake that is as rewatchable as its original version.
Are You Afraid Of The Dark? (Original & 1999 Revival Series)
Seven Seasons
Are You Afraid Of The Dark? is an anthology horror series aimed at a young audience – however, that doesn’t mean that the show isn’t scary. Every episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? is a different story, told by one of the members of the Midnight Society, a group of teenagers who meet in the forest at midnight to tell scary stories.
Are You Afraid Of The Dark? has some truly scary episodes, most notably “The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner”, “The Tale of the Super Specs”, and “The Tale of the Dollmaker.” Even though Are You Afraid Of The Dark? came out many years ago, the horrors in its episodes are still relatable, as they mix psychological horror with fantasy and sci-fi elements.
Black Mirror
Preparing Its Eighth Season
While Black Mirror is primarily a sci-fi anthology show, most of its episodes cross into horror territory in different and clever ways. Black Mirror doesn’t need gore, slasher villains, and tons of blood to be scary. Instead, Black Mirror focuses on the impact of advanced technology on society, in dystopian contexts that, more often than not, are pure nightmare fuel.
What makes Black Mirror so scary is how real it is. Surely, many of its sci-fi elements are still pure fantasy, but there are others that have already shown up in the real world. Black Mirror is a warning of how far technology can go and its dangerous consequences, and not a source of inspiration for the real world.
Evil
Four Seasons
Evil is a supernatural drama TV series that follows Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), a forensic psychologist who takes a new job offered by the Catholic Church. Kristen begins to work with seminarian David Acosta (Mike Colter) and skeptical technology contractor Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), and together they investigate alleged supernatural events that put their beliefs and faith to the test.
Evil explores both supernatural horrors and real-life ones, with criminals and actions that are so real that they end up being a lot scarier than any demon or evil ghost. Some episodes of Evil are quite shocking, and it still stands as one of the best horror TV shows of all time.
The Haunting of Hill House
One Season
The Haunting of Hill House is a supernatural horror drama TV series loosely based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name. The Haunting of Hill House tells the story of the Crain family, who move into the title mansion to renovate it and sell it. When unexpected repairs keep them at Hill House longer than expected, the Crains begin to experience increasing paranormal activity.
Years later, when a tragedy hits the family, the surviving Crains are forced to confront their past at Hill House and how it has affected them for years. The Haunting of Hill House is one of the best TV shows of all time and one of the best Netflix originals to date, and its subtle clues and hidden ghosts in almost every scene make it a perfect show to watch more than once.
The Twilight Zone (Original Series)
Five Seasons
One of the most influential TV shows of all time is the anthology series The Twilight Zone, which brought together sci-fi, horror, and drama, with the occasional comedic episode. Each episode of The Twilight Zone tells a different story, most of them with a twist and a disturbing ending with a moral.
While there definitely are episodes that haven’t aged well and have lost impact over the years, most of the episodes of The Twilight Zone are still disturbing, scary, and invite the audience to think about certain topics. The Twilight Zone is a classic, and classics are always worth rewatching.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Seven Seasons
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a supernatural horror drama that follows Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a succession of young women chosen by faith and known as “Slayers.” Their mission is to battle against vampires, demons, monsters, and other forces of darkness. Buffy is accompanied by her mentor and Watcher, Giles, along with her best friends Willow and Xander.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a perfect balance of horror, action, drama, and comedy, with relatable characters, and addresses serious and complex topics with depth and respect. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is creative, fun, and deep, and it doesn’t get tiring or old upon a rewatch (or multiple).
