Despite major competition, a beloved spy thriller is proving why it has stood the test of time with its strong performance on streaming. The show recently returned after a decade-long hibernation, during which several series and films inspired by it received accolades and audience support. The show's second season, which was released in January, found itself fending off similar titles for attention. For instance, Apple TV was doing stupendously well with Slow Horses and Tehran, both of which have released multiple seasons over the last decade. Elsewhere, Peacock debuted the acclaimed series Ponies. More recently, Netflix threw its hat in the ring with the word-of-mouth sensation Unfamiliar.
However, despite the pressure, the show in question has persevered. We're talking, of course, about The Night Manager. Originally released in 2016 as a limited series, the show returned with a second season of six episodes in January. The new season brought back Tom Hiddleston as the titular spy, with Camila Morrone and Diego Calva joining the cast as new characters. The first season pitted Hiddleston's secret agent against a nefarious arms dealer played by Hugh Laurie. The Oscar-winning Olivia Colman played the protagonist's handler. The Night Manager is based on the book of the same name by John le Carré, who is often regarded as the greatest writer of espionage thrillers.
'The Night Manager' Has Received Critical Acclaim
According to FlixPatrol, the show has spent over one month on the Prime Video streaming charts, reinforcing its popularity. The new season, like the first, received critical acclaim. It holds a "Certified Fresh" 88% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Marking a belated but welcome return for Tom Hiddleston's tortured spy, The Night Manager's second season is a glamorous and haunted continuation that only gets better as it goes." In her review, Collider's Kelcie Mattson wrote, "Season 2's cohesive structure neatly slots into the established rules and ambiance of le Carré's standalone world, while the overarching arc builds to heightened stakes."
You can watch The Night Manager on Prime Video. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
