Few actors have a filmography as full of sci-fi hits as Tom Hardy, who has starred in a trio of Venom movies as well as a 10/10 Batman masterpiece for Christopher Nolan. Hardy has only one Oscar nomination to his name, for his portrayal opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant, which is returning to theaters at the end of this month to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Over the years, Hardy has ventured into nearly every genre imaginable for various movies and TV shows, but there’s one of his projects that stands out above the rest.
In 2015, Tom Hardy teamed up with Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Apocalypse) for Mad Max: Fury Road, a reimagining of the classic story first brought to life by director George Miller and star Mel Gibson in the late 1970s. Mad Max: Fury Road is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential sci-fi movies of all time, despite Hardy getting into spats on set with his co-star Charlize Theron. The film still managed scores of 97% from critics and 86% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $380 million at the global box office against a $150 million budget. It wasn’t as big a financial hit as it deserved to be.
In America, Mad Max: Fury Road is, tragically, not streaming anywhere at the time of writing. The film had previously found a home on HBO Max and even Netflix for a stint, but both streamers have removed the sci-fi epic from their libraries over the last few months. Mad Max is still streaming on HBO Max in various international territories, where it’s surged into the top 10 in nearly 10 countries.
Is ‘Furiosa’ a Sequel or a Prequel?
George Miller returned to the world of Mad Max a few years ago with Furiosa, the sci-fi epic starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy. The film is a prequel to Tom Hardy’s Mad Max movies, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing the titular role that previously belonged to Charlize Theron. Furiosa debuted to widespread critical and audience acclaim, which included scores of 90% from critics and 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it flopped at the box office, grossing only $174 million against a $168 million budget.
Watch Mad Max: Fury Road on VOD platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
