During his lengthy and much-loved career in the industry, Tom Hardy has done plenty of films. Prior to 2023, he was averaging multiple feature-length projects annually, jumping from genre to genre and shifting into the face of a franchise with his work in the Venom films. But, when it comes to the small screen, Hardy’s long-running projects are few and far between. He’s had plenty of one-off episodes (particularly early on in his career), with his career receiving a jump start from appearances in favorites like Band of Brothers, Colditz and The Virgin Queen, and yet the television bug never quite bit him in the way the cinematic one did.
That all began to shift for him in 2014 when the actor paired with Steven Knight for a recurring role in the hit period piece, Peaky Blinders. Hardy took on the role of Alfie Solomons in the second season of BBC’s cutthroat drama and shook things up for the chaps led by Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby. Over a handful of episodes that ran through multiple seasons, audiences watched as Hardy’s gang leader pulled his own set of tricks and both worked with and against Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders.
The character was an immediate fan-favorite largely thanks to the work that Hardy poured into the part and his work in the drama series helped Hardy form a long-lasting collaborative link with Knight. His friendship with Knight blossomed so much so that during Hardy’s recurring role in Peaky Blinders, the pair branched out to bring the world yet another period drama. Right now, according to FlixPatrol, that series, Taboo, is enjoying a global resurgence thanks to on-demand streaming on the Apple TV Store.
What Is ‘Taboo’ About?
Image via BBCOver eight episodes, Taboo transports audiences to 1814 where they meet a businessman and world traveler named James Delaney (Hardy). The entrepreneur has just returned to his home of England after living in Africa for the last 12 years and must now come to terms with the life he left behind all while getting out from under the thumb of corruption thanks to corporations like the East India Company. Not only does Hardy star in the project, but he also co-created the series alongside his father, Chips Hardy, and Knight. With intriguing characters and a drama-driven storyline that also provided plenty of action, Taboo was largely a hit for the BBC, even finding its way onto the awards circuit during its short yet successful run.
Taboo is now streaming on Prime Video in the U.S.
