With Tom Hardy’s future in the TV crime thriller MobLand still hanging in the balance, it’s unclear when we’re likely to see the actor onscreen again after the show’s second season concludes. The good news for Hardy’s fans is that he already has another crime thriller in the works, which could well steal the thunder of MobLand season 3.

In lieu of an unlikely comeback for his sharpshooting protagonist Patrick Walker following Havoc’s explosive ending on Netflix last year, the actor’s next role will almost certainly be another rogue police officer, in the upcoming heist feature 77 Blackout. Hardy has already signed on to co-produce the movie as well as star in it.

AKansas City BTulsa, Oklahoma CNashville DAlbuquerque

✓ Correct! The character is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, a fish-out-of-water setup that creates both comedy and tension as a New York mob boss tries to build a criminal empire in unfamiliar territory. The collision between East Coast mob culture and Oklahoma is central to the show’s identity.

✗ You’ve been made! The answer is Tulsa, Oklahoma. The show’s original title, Tulsa King, came directly from this premise. Sending a New York mob figure to build an operation in the heartland creates a unique culture-clash dynamic that sets the show apart from typical crime dramas.

✓ Correct! Stallone plays Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York Mafia capo who took the fall for his boss and served 25 years in prison without snitching. Upon release, instead of being rewarded, he’s sent to Tulsa — which he turns into an opportunity rather than a punishment.

✗ You’ve been made! The answer is Dwight “The General” Manfredi. The nickname speaks to his commanding presence and strategic mind. Tony Manero is Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever character — a deliberate distractor for Stallone fans who know his contemporaries well.

Unlike many mob dramas that lean heavily into darkness, Mobland has been praised for balancing crime with which unexpected tonal quality that sets it apart from shows like The Sopranos or Boardwalk Empire?

AMusical numbers BFound-footage documentary style CSupernatural horror elements DDark comedy and fish-out-of-water humor

✓ Correct! Mobland blends crime drama with surprisingly effective dark comedy. Stallone’s Dwight navigating Tulsa’s culture — from marijuana dispensaries to horse country — creates a fish-out-of-water dynamic that’s both charming and funny, giving the show a lighter touch than typical mob fare.

✗ You’ve been made! The answer is dark comedy and fish-out-of-water humor. What makes Mobland stand out in the crowded mob genre is its willingness to be funny. Stallone’s old-school New York gangster reacting to Oklahoma culture provides a comedic engine that most crime dramas don’t have.

↻ TAKE ANOTHER MEETING

As its title suggests, this film will be set during the famous two-day blackout in New York during July 1977. It’s going to be about more than just a survival thriller, though, as Tom Hardy and Maharshala Ali have been cast as crooked cops planning a major heist on the city’s biggest crime syndicates.

In this sense, 77 Blackout is a clever inversion of one of Ali’s best TV roles, police detective Wayne Hays in True Detective. The movie has several other key figures already attached to it, and it’s surely only a matter of time before we get more news about its cast list and production schedule.

What To Expect Of Tom Hardy’s Next Big Crime Thriller 77 Blackout

77 Blackout was announced back in May 2024, and it appears that the movie is currently in pre-production. With Tom Hardy’s schedule apparently clear after MobLand season 2’s release, it’s possible that filming could begin later this year. Hardy’s production company Hardy Son & Baker is co-producing the film.

It appears that independent media distribution company Black Bear Pictures is taking the lead with production, though, as it already has a listing for 77 Blackout on its website. The listing gives the following brief synopsis for the movie:

In 1977, five rogue police officers formulate a plan to rob three criminal strongholds – the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob – all in one night. When a blackout sweeps the city the night of the robbery, the crew is forced to navigate a hellish landscape as years of being overworked and underpaid forces each of them to confront their own morality.

77 Blackout isn’t just a survival crime thriller focusing on the titular New York blackout itself, then, like the TV series City on Fire, and other screen dramatizations of this catastrophic event. It’s also a heist movie, which plays to Tom Hardy’s strength by involving elements of gangster drama, too.

Alongside Hardy, Mahershala Ali is the only other cast member of 77 Blackout confirmed so far, although the movie’s co-writer Frank John Hughes – of Sopranos fame – could feature in an onscreen role as well. With no fresh update about Ali’s impending MCU Blade movie, the path seems clear for this heist thriller to begin production as soon as possible.

Behind the camera, James Bond director Cary Joji Fukunaga is helming the movie, having also written its script alongside Hughes. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer’s Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven is overseeing the project.

The names of Tom Hardy and Mahershala Ali’s characters in 77 Blackout have already been confirmed, too. Hardy is playing Ray Butler. Hardy is playing Eddie Boyle, and Ali is playing Ray Butler. Both these characters are likely among the rogue cops that Black Bear mentions in the movie’s synopsis.

Tom Hardy’s MobLand Future Remains Uncertain

Tom Hardy’s Harry Da Souza giving a stern look in MobLand

It’s just as well that Tom Hardy has 77 Blackout to look forward to, because his future with Guy Ritchie’s TV gangster drama MobLand is still very much up in the air. Paramount is apparently attempting to reverse Hardy’s exit prior to season 3 of the show, with Ritchie and others involved in negotiations with the actor.

Fans of the Paramount+ series are waiting on tenterhooks for confirmation about whether he’s staying or going. But for Hardy himself, it could well be a win-win situation. If he stays, MobLand should continue to go from strength to strength, and if he goes, he’ll be freed up to start working on 77 Blackout.
