Tom Cruise will be the recipient of the American Film Institute‘s prestigious life achievement award. The “Mission: Impossible” and “Digger” star will be feted with a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24.

“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” said AFI board of trustees chair Kathleen Kennedy wrote in a statement. “As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together. That passion has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world. It is AFI’s honor to present him with the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award.”

Now 64 years old, Cruise has remained one of the industry’s most prominent stars since he launched in the 1980’s with leading roles in “Risky Business,” “Top Gun,” and “The Color of Money.” As the unshakably determined secret agent Ethan Hunt, he led the “Mission: Impossible” action series across 30 years, starring in eight entries and subjecting himself to increasingly daredevil stunt-work as they went along. Other blockbuster titles have included “Rain Man,” “A Few Good Men,” “Collateral,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” and “Interview with the Vampire.”

Cruise has also been nominated for three Oscars: in lead actor for 1989’s “Born on the Fourth of July” and 1996’s “Jerry Maguire,” and in supporting actor for 1999’s “Magnolia.” He was also an Academy Award nominee as a producer for 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was nominated for best picture. In 2025, he received an honorary Oscar from the Academy at the organization’s annual Governor’s Awards.
