Tom Cruise’s Digger Is A Musical According To A Surprisingly Believable Theory

Rumors have abounded that Tom Cruise's upcoming movie release may secretly be a musical, and it's easy to see why people have considered this as a possibility, even if the evidence for this theory may have a different explanation in reality. While Tom Cruise has an extensive filmography with over 50 movie roles, this history tends to focus in on several specific genres, with most of this roster being either action movies or comedy movies, and occasionally both.

As such, the prospect of Tom Cruise being in a musical is one that's naturally fascinated audiences - though it wouldn't mark the first time the actor has been in a movie that lands within the musical genre, given his prior role in the 2012 musical comedy Rock of Ages, wherein Cruise played the role of Stacee Jaxx, a rockstar who serves as one of the central characters in the film, and who is involved in a fair share of the musical numbers.

With this in mind, it's not impossible to imagine that Tom Cruise could appear in another musical at this point in time, which may well have played its own role in helping craft the theory that Cruise's next movie - which is set to release very soon - is a secret musical that has been carefully concealing this status during its promotion thus far.

Theories About Digger Being A Musical Look More & More Possible The More That's Revealed About The Film

The initial theories around Tom Cruise's Digger being a musical appear to have come from several different angles. First and foremost, the theory has in no small way appeared because the film has been clearly and intentionally crafted to be surreally and darkly comedic in a way that keeps you unable to predict it, as was clear from the first teases about its tone and story - which would align with taking the surprise twist to have the movie take a musical edge.

Of course, there is also the fact that Tom Cruise did notably discuss wanting to perform in a musical again in 2025, mentioning in an interview with Edith Bowman as quoted by People that he hoped to appear in a musical following his work ending the Mission Impossible series with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. As the next movie in Cruise's filmography after The Final Reckoning, it makes sense these theories have emerged for Digger given these previous statements too.

Then, there is also the matter of the previews we've gotten of Digger itself, which have further promised a premise that embraces its own satire enough that it certainly wouldn't be totally out of place to have a musical number. Indeed, fans have also noted that early looks at the movie feature a revolving stage the likes of which live musicals and musical performances also tend to use in one scene, further exacerbating the theories that the film will break into a musical performance before the end of its run.

Why Digger Probably Isn't A Musical (Even Though It Could Totally Work)

While the prospect of Digger being a musical doesn't seem like it would be entirely out of place in the story that's been set up thus far, it also seems perhaps more likely at this point in time that this theory is one simply born out of those reading the intentionally over-the-top acting and writing of Digger's trailer as being reflective of the movie being a musical, when it in fact seems more indicative of its satire leanings.

With a story that features Tom Cruise's oil tycoon character Digger Rockwell going to all efforts to try and correct a disaster that he appears to have caused, and a seeming focus on the themes of power and corruption, there doesn't quite seem to be space to fit in a sequence of musical numbers without this ending up taking perhaps too much focus away from the rest of Digger's subject matter. Though, with that said, it also doesn't seem strictly or entirely impossible that this could be the case if the cards landed just right, despite it all.
