After a disastrous two-week run at the box office, the big-budget political satire film Digger has been put out of its misery by Warner Bros. Entering its third week, the movie registered one of the largest theater drops of all time. Digger, starring Tom Cruise and directed by two-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, was given a massive marketing push built around the star's legacy. He is still a contender for a Best Actor nomination, although the film's performance has certainly cast a shadow of doubt over his chances. In addition to emerging as one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time — Digger is poised to lose an estimated $250 million — the movie opened to divisive reviews.

It has, however, found vocal support from a host of A-listers such as Ben Affleck and Anne Hathaway, and is well on its way to becoming a cult hit. It remains to be seen if Digger can garner any Oscar nods, which will only help it in the long run. The movie currently stands at a 53% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "A stylized satire whose audacious design proves too mannered for some of the laughs to smoothly land, Digger is a bold swing of the shovel by Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu that misses as often as it strikes gold." Future cult success is the most that the movie can hope for, given its current box-office haul.

'Digger' Has Registered the Third-Largest Theater Drop in History

The movie is poised to conclude its domestic run with under $20 million, and has only grossed around $40 million so far at the worldwide box office. It cost a reported $180 million to produce. This Friday, Digger was removed from 2,758 theaters by Warner Bros. It had already lost key IMAX screens last week. Digger is now responsible for the third-largest screen drop in history, behind only Blake Lively's action-thriller The Rhythm Section, which lost 2,955 theaters in week three, and Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho, which was removed from 2,780 theaters in its third week. Also starring John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Emma D'Arcy, the movie is still playing in around 560 theaters nationwide.
