Todd McFarlane Launches a Batman Even Bigger Than the Absolute Version

2 weeks ago 6

Batman may have bulked up in the recent Absolute Universe line of comics, but a new figure from Todd McFarlane's toy company gives the Dark Knight a redesign that would make his Absolute counterpart blush. McFarlane Toys will be releasing vinyl figures of DC Comics characters in an all-new line of figures dubbed “Todd’s Mods,” which feature exaggerated proportions and an abundance of attitude.

Set to be released by McFarlane Toys in December 2024, the Todd’s Mods line consists of 4.5” posed vinyl figures, with the first releases featuring hulking versions of Batman, Bane, and Swamp Thing. The company also promoted its new figures in a YouTube video.

The design gives each character hulking proportions and features the highly-detailed sculpts and paint applications that fans have come to expect from McFarlane Toys. All three figures will be available individually and as part of a limited edition three-pack.

New Figures of Batman, Bane, and Swamp Thing

McFarlane Toys has been one of the leading companies in the toy industry since its launch in 1994. McFarlane’s toy company put a greater emphasis on sculpting and paint application than was typically seen in action figures at the time, helping to boost a burgeoning collector’s market with toys and collectibles aimed at adult collectors. McFarlane acquired the rights to make DC Comics figures, releasing the first wave of the popular DC Multiverse line in 2020. Featuring an array of figures featuring characters based on specific comic book artists’ styles and on their film and TV adaptations, the DC Multiverse line has been a hit.

If the line is successful, hopefully these first three characters are just the tip of the iceberg.

In addition to traditional sixth-scale action figures, McFarlane has also branched out into other areas of collectibles. 2024 saw the release of a new wave of Marvel statues that recreate classic comic book covers, including McFarlane’s own work from the eighties and early nineties.

Perfect for Fans of the Brand-New Absolute Batman

The new Todd’s Mods line shows McFarlane Toys expanding its horizons yet again, producing posed vinyl figures with unique designs and proportions. The designs for Swamp Thing and Bane make the already inhuman-looking characters even more monstrous, and the musclebound Dark Knight would probably make for a great stand-in for collectors looking for an Absolute Batman to adorn their shelves.

The foundations of Batman lore are as famous as the hero, but DC's new Absolute Batman is rewriting almost everything fans know about the Dark Knight.

If the line is successful, hopefully these first three characters are just the tip of the iceberg. Any number of DC heroes and villains would be perfect for the heavily-stylized treatment, including the Joker, Deathstroke, Lobo, Superman, and more. It could also be cool to see what Todd’s Mods versions of Wonder Woman and Poison Ivy would look like in the scale. With any luck, this first release of Todd’s Mods vinyl figures is the opening salvo that will eventually encompass the entire DC Universe. At the very least, it should tide fans over until McFarlane Toys decides to release an official Absolute Batman figure.
