Today's Connections Hints & Answers For January 23, 2025 (Puzzle #592)

If you are attempting to surpass your best score in today's Connections you will need to win and do so without using all of your guesses. That can be hard, and it is especially so in a puzzle like this one where the words have a lot of crossover and there is one category that seems harder than it should be. If you want to get fast-tracked past that, we have all the hints you need to get in the carpool lane to the right answers and maintain your streak.

If you are looking for a game that is more about constructing words than categorizing them, then the NYT’s Spelling Bee puzzle is the right one for you. There are many words out there, but the letters in the hexagons will determine which ones you can actually spell. You will have to be creative, but you have as many guesses as you need to get all the words you can from the letters in the puzzle. The more you get, the more you can boast to your friends later.

If you are looking for hints, this is the puzzle to get them on. There are some confusing words and one category that has way too many possible right answers. Usually, there is a 5th word that might belong somewhere, but in this one, there is also a potential 6th. To avoid that trap, check out the following clues to help you get them all without wasting any guesses. Once you do, you will be off to the races.

• One category is about things you would use to reconstruct a specific look
• One category is about four words that all sound very similar to the names of particular people

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained

This is the category that could mess with you, and it did get to me. That said, I really thought I had guessed this combination of words first, so I was quite angry that the game said I hadn’t. It doesn’t matter that much, and it is certainly possible I didn’t, but I even thought I re-guessed it, and it gave me the “Already Guessed” dialogue. SMARTER and WIDEN were both words that I thought could go here. SMARTER makes more sense, but “to WIDEN the gap” would mean something fairly similar. Either way, this one foiled me.

Green Answers: Revealed & Explained

I got this one right off the bat, in contrast. It didn’t have any of those words in it, and the words are all fairly obvious. This is the perfect picture of a sunny day with a picnic with all the right accessories. This is a nice, pleasant category, and it makes up for some of the frustration I felt in the other category. The COOLER is probably the oddest one in here, as I don’t think about taking one in the picturesque Jane Austen way, but it is practical.

Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained

If you are looking to put together the best Indiana Jones costume, you will need all of these accessories. I think BOMBER is the most deceptive here, as you have to know that there are jackets called that to understand that it’s an article of clothing rather than a person with a bomb. For me, it was seeing FEDORA and WHIP that clued me into this one. I would also be quite disappointed in myself if I, the archaeologist, did not get this category correct.

Purple Answers: Revealed & Explained

Last, there is the very weird category of rhyming words. I never like these, but it is what it is. It did not help that the two words that I thought might belong in the yellow category actually were together in this last one. It was an unfortunate combination, particularly if it did somehow glitch. I must have guessed something I thought I didn’t but that will just teach me to pay a bit more attention to which words I click.
