Warning! Spoilers for Outlander season 8, episode 1 ahead!Outlander missed a chance to bring back one of its earliest traditions in season 8, but it made up for it with a wonderful surprise. This installment marks the grand finale of the romantasy series, and given its 12-year run, that's a pretty big deal. We expect nostalgia and excitement, and with just one episode, Outlander is already answering the call. Still, there are some minor expectations that the season 8 premiere didn't quite meet.
An iconic feature of early seasons of Outlander was Claire's voiceover narration. Through each step of the story, we heard her voice poetically spelling out her experiences, adding significantly to the whimsy of the series while providing meaningful context. This started to fade away as Outlander went on. Precisely why is hard to say. For years, viewers have been asking for the return of that early-season tradition. Season 8 seemed like the perfect time to deliver.
If Outlander season 8's premiere had brought back Claire's voiceover, it would have felt like a full-circle moment. It's the sort of nostalgia we would expect from the final installment in such a long-running series. Somewhat disappointingly, Outlander had different ideas. "Soul of a Rebel" was a great episode, but it came and went without the sound of Claire's narrations. In the very last moments, however, the premiere episode made up for it.
Outlander Season 8's Big Surprise Is Better Than A Claire Voiceover
At the end of Outlander season 8, episode 1, we hear not Caitriona Balfe's voiceover, but that of Tobias Menzies. Jamie hears Black Jack Randall speaking to him as he looks at Frank Randall's picture in his book—"Is it my face you see looming in the darkness?"
While it at first seemed that Outlander had gone back and clipped this line from season 1, when it was originally spoken, we have since learned otherwise. Menzies is credited in this episode for a "special guest performance," and Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and executive producer Maril Davis have now confirmed that we can expect to hear the voices of Menzies characters, Frank and Black Jack, throughout the upcoming episodes—that more than makes up for the absence of Claire's narrations.
Claire's Voiceover Narration Could Still Return In Outlander's Final Season
It makes sense that Outlander season 8 would opt out of Claire's narration with the addition of Menzies' voiceovers. Having both in and out throughout the episodes would be a bit too much, ultimately lessening the overall effect. Had there been a way to bring Menzies on screen, perhaps as a sort of phantom haunting over Jamie as he contemplates Frank's warning, a narration from Claire would have been a good touch. As it is, however, now is not the time.
Still, there's hope that Outlander season 8 will bring this feature back before things come to a definitive close, especially as the romantasy works to poetically bring us full circle. There are several answers to magical mysteries that we still need, some of which stretch all the way back to season 1 (such as why Jamie's ghost appeared in the 20th century to long over Claire). Then there are more recent puzzles, like Faith's miraculous survival after her death in Outlander season 2. A voiceover would assist on all fronts.
Claire's narrations were always a great way to clue viewers in to the subtler plot points while adding that sense of haunting and poetic whimsy. If not the premiere, then the final episode of Outlander would greatly benefit from the return of this feature as a final full-circle moment. By that point, we can assume that Frank or Black Jack's haunting voices will have been put to rest along with Jamie's anxieties, so Claire would be clear to chime back in. Only time will tell, but it certainly feels like the perfect way to close the final chapter of this magical story.
