If a TV show includes crime, darkness, violence, or merely wants an actor who can handle a complex role, Titus Welliver is more than up to the challenge. The veteran actor is a mainstay of multiple genres, able to adapt and mold himself into whatever a series requires of him. Within the DC Comics universe, Welliver has lent his skills a few times, but not every role has given audiences enough time to watch him embody the fantastical characters.
Welliver's work in Bosch is one of the actor's most famous projects. As Harry Bosch, Welliver leans into the gritty side of the crime drama, proving himself as the kind of actor who can handle playing a villain in the DC universe. Over the years, DC has developed different adaptations of its beloved comics, each bringing something new to the table and tapping actors like Welliver to join the cast.
In Titans season 4, Welliver took on one of the best-known DC characters, Lex Luthor. This was an exciting challenge for him, but there's already more to explore for the actor and audiences thanks to Welliver's DC Universe return. The problems with Welliver's time on Titans are being solved by the explosive new animated show, Get Jiro!.
Titus Welliver's Titans Role As Lex Luthor Was Bafflingly Short
The 2018 live-action DC series Titans had fun playing with the familiar characters within the comic universe. Primarily following younger characters like Nightwing and Starfire, Titans leaned into the dark side of DC, only getting better as the seasons progressed. It was in Titans season 4, the final installment of the show, when Welliver appeared in Titans, to mixed results.
Welliver's role as Lex Luthor is one of the most confusing parts of Titans. When it comes to most adaptations of DC Comics where Luthor plays a role, he is a prominent villain who overshadows most other characters. However, this isn't how Titans chose to portray Luthor. Welliver appears, dark and sinister, as Luthor, capturing the viewers' attention, but is gone just as quickly as Titans kills him off.
It seemed a waste for an actor as skilled as Welliver to step into a role as iconic as Lex Luthor, only for Lex to die in the episode he's first introduced. Titans is an example of how many DC shows have missed the mark when it comes to bringing their source material to life. Though it ran for four seasons, Titans never quite rose to prominence within the comic book genre.
Get Jiro! Is Already A Better DC Series For Titus Welliver
Get Jiro! is one of the best new shows in the DC universe, and Welliver finally has the opportunity to play a character worthy of his talents in the series. Comedic, violent, and gorgeously animated, Get Jiro! puts a culinary twist on the post-apocalyptic genre. The titular character, Jiro, exists in a world where society has collapsed, and chefs have stepped up as the most powerful class. Brian Tee voices Jiro, with Welliver playing Bob, a rival chef and crime boss.
So far, Bob only appears in three episodes of Get Jiro!, but it didn't take much for this DC role to have more meat for Welliver to work with than Titans. In Titans, Lex Luthor's short tenure only made audiences wish that Welliver had the opportunity to spend more time onscreen. As Bob, Welliver gets to have fun with the genre-bending source material. Though Welliver's voice is distinctive, he's still able to disappear into the world of Get Jiro!.
There's no word on the future of Get Jiro!, but there's reason to be hopeful. Initial reviews from critics are positive, and there's always room for a well-animated, bloody action series on TV. As new episodes of Get Jiro! come out, and audiences get to see more of Bob and Jiro, it's likely that Titus Welliver will continue proving himself as a perfect addition to this new show.
