Timothee Chalamet as Willy Looking Shocked with Candy in His Mouth in Wonka

Timothée Chalamet surprised fans when he appeared at a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest. The contest took place on October 27 in New York City's Washington Square Park as hundreds of individuals dressed up as the actor and many of his most well-known movie characters. This included lookalikes of Willy Wonka from Paul King's Wonka and Bob Dylan from the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold. Chalamet is currently in New York to film Josh Safdie's sports drama movie Marty Supreme.

On X (formerly Twitter), @itweetabttv shared a picture of Chalamet posing with the event's attendees and a video of a lookalike's shocked reaction to seeing the real Chalamet there in person. Check out the posts below:

While the pleasant surprise was the indisputable highlight of the event, according to NBC, the significant size and enthusiasm of the attendees led to police attempting to disperse the crowd due to gathering without a permit, and one attendee was detained. Meanwhile, the event's winner was later named and won the $50 grand prize.

What This Means For Timothée Chalamet

He Is A True Movie Star

Chalamet's surprise appearance, the reaction to his presence, and the premise of the event itself are strong indicators of the actor's immense star power. While there is discourse about whether there are any true movie stars left, there is no denying Chalamet's stardom. The box office success of Wonka and Dune: Part Two made them two of the biggest hits within the past year, which is a testament to Chalamet's ability to get audiences excited and to the theater instead of waiting until his movies are available to stream.

Movie

Worldwide Gross

Wonka (2023)

$634.4 million

Dune: Part Two (2024)

$714.4 million

This is not just about the characters he plays, but about the way he makes an effort to connect with fans, as he did by attending the lookalike event and taking pictures with many of the attendees. He did not need to take time out of his busy schedule while filming Marty Supreme to do this, but the fact that he did is part of what makes him distinct from many other actors. This one appearance does not have significant bearing on his career, but it does speak volumes about Chalamet and how he is perceived.

Our Take On Timothée Chalamet's Surprise Appearance

He Continues To Thrive In 2024

Chalamet's performance in Dune: Part Two's ending may no longer be his defining moment of 2024, with it potentially being eclipsed by his surprise appearance at the lookalike contest. One has only to look at pictures and videos of the events to see that he is considered to be one of the most well-known and popular modern-day movie stars. This should continue to be evident with the likely success of A Complete Unknown, Marty Supreme, and Timothée Chalamet's other upcoming movies.
