Tim Curry, who shot to stardom in his signature role as the corset-wearing “sweet transvestite from transexual Transylvania” Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 80 years old.
While a cause of death was not immediately available, Curry had been in precarious health since suffering a major stroke in 2012. He had used a wheelchair since the stroke and the brain surgery that followed.
TMZ is reporting that Los Angeles police responded to his house at 11:23 p.m. Tuesday night. Foul play is not suspected.
In addition to Rocky Horror, Curry also portrayed the evil, grinning clown Pennywise in the 1990 TV miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It, as well as memorable roles in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Annie, Addams Family Reunion and Scary Movie 2, among many others.
