TikTok is exploring a feature that would let users send money to one another through direct messages, extending the platform’s push into financial services, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
Hidden code in the current US iPhone app indicates that the feature could use TikTok Pay, which is currently available in Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand for TikTok Shop purchases.
The code suggests recipients could accept payments before an expiration date, while senders could receive status notifications and attach messages to transfers.
A TikTok spokesperson said the feature is not being tested in any market. The company may ultimately decide not to launch it.
TikTok and parent ByteDance have expanded into commerce and payments as social platforms seek more consumer spending and engagement. The companies are also recruiting for financial-services roles in the US and other markets.
Consumers have spent more than $2.9 billion on TikTok worldwide this year, according to Sensor Tower. TikTok has led global apps in in-app purchase revenue since 2022.
TikTok already supports Shop transactions and digital coins used for virtual gifts. Direct peer-to-peer payments could keep more transactions within the app, but some existing payment tools have faced lawsuits alleging child exploitation and violations of money-transmission laws.
