Those About to Die director Roland Emmerich discusses what season 2 would explore. Those About to Die is an action-packed historical comedy drama that explores Ancient Rome through the lens of the entertainment business. The series has one season, and has released 10 episodes on Peacock. Those About to Die features a leading cast including Anthony Hopkins, Iwan Rheon, Sara Martins, Jojo Macari, Moe Hashim, Tom Hughes, and Dimitri Leonidas.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Emmerich envisions what Those About to Die season 2 might look like. Likening the prospective second season to Godfather II, the director explained that he would like to tell stories using a "present timeline" and "past timeline." The flashback periods would explore The Year of Four Emperors, set 10 years before the events of Those About to Die season 1. These moments include Emperor Nero's suicide and the resulting struggle for power. The season would alternate between this history and the present-day timeline.

What This Means For Those About To Die Season 2's Chances

Those About To Die Has Not Been Renewed

While Emmerich has presented an engaging outline for Those About to Die season 2, it is important to note that the series does not actually have a confirmed renewal from Peacock. In the nearly two months since Those About To Die's season 1's ending, there has been non concrete update about whether a second season is happening at Peacock. Emmerich's outline is certainly a good sign that Those About to Die season 2 could happen, but it does not at all mean that anything is happening for sure.

In addition to Emmerich's clear plan for a next installment, there have been some other good indicators of Those About to Die having a season 2. One such metric has been the fact that its viewership has been good since its release. The show came in at no. 6 on the Nielsen streaming charts for the week of July 22 to July 28, its first full week on the Peacock. This is a good sign that Those About to Die amassed a significant enough audience to warrant a second season.

One 2024 Film Might Help Those About To Die Season 2

While I am not sure Those About to Die's initial numbers alone are enough to get it the second season, I can think of one 2024 movie that might help improve the series. This is Ridley Scott's upcoming sequel film, Gladiator II, which is also a historical epic set in Rome. Though the projects are tonally very different, the release of Gladiator II might spur further fans of Ancient Rome projects, renewing interest in Those About to Die. Given Emmerich's detailed plays for a next chapter, Those About to Die season 2 could go well, making for a great next season.
