This Morning descended into chaos on Wednesday after Rick Stein presented a 'car crash' cookery segment.

The celebrity chef, 79, was trying to demonstrate how to make prawn pilaf from his new cookbook but things didn't get off to a good start when he couldn't operate the induction hob.

He told hosts Sian Welby and Dermot O'Leary: 'I don't know what it is, but I just find using these ovens, induction ovens, very tricky. I don't know why. I've got them at home.'

As Rick tried to carry on, one of the knobs accidentally fell to the floor and a beeping sound could be heard, prompting Dermot to step in and ask if Rick meant for the hob to be at such a high temperature.

Sure enough, it wasn't long until Rick's shallots were burnt to a crisp in a pan, with the chef admitting the faux pas.

He recounted how the last time he was on the show he made Christmas pudding but forgot to add in the fruit.

Rick then swore on live TV as he said: 'I've been saying "don't throw away your prawn shells" and I get p***ed off, excuse my language.'

Dermot put his head in his hands, before saying: 'No, don't apologise, you're Rick Stein, we'll apologise on your behalf.'

Viewers were amused by the chaotic scenes and commented on X: 'I think we can safely say that was Rick Stein’s last appearance on This Morning! That "p****d off" slip of the tongue was something else!'

'Somebody please preserve Rick Stein. #ThisMorning He is taking the Wayne Rooney route to national treasure status'

'At least Rick didn't do a Ramsey and use the F-word.'

'Rick Stein saying "p****d off" on #thismorning was not on my bingo card. Especially in relation to prawn shells...'

He cautiously told them: 'Oh, it's gone a bit spooky across the top, but that's OK,' as they got their forks at the ready.

Fans were quick to take to X to call out John's cooking, as they penned: 'Hahahaha looks a bit burnt.';

'Burnt food is delish, yeah right…'; 'Don't think its meant to be that colour!'; 'Was that caramelised John?'
