There has long been talk of a Dungeons & Dragons live-action TV show, but one hero-villain duo tips the scales in its favor, offering fantasy its next Batman and Joker. Paramount dropped their D&D TV show in the wake of the box office disappointment of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but the concept is being shopped around. As such a wide franchise, Dungeons & Dragons has corners that not even all D&D fans know about, ranging from a tabletop game and video game to movies and books. But Dark Elf Drizzt Do'Urden and his arch-nemesis need little introduction.
Drizzt Do'Urden originated in R.A. Salvatore's The Icewind Dale book trilogy in 1988 but has gone on to feature in 39 books that have a semi-cult following. He also features in the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance video game, and is a playable character in the popular Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition game. It was a travesty that Drizzt was cut from the Honor Among Thieves movie, but his place of origin, the Underdark, had a cameo, teasing an exciting future for drow on film. But it is Artemis Entreri that really makes Drizzt perfect for the screen.
Drizzt And Artemis' Love-Hate Standoff Is The Perfect Hook For A Live-Action TV Show
Heroes Need An Arch-Nemesis Who Reflects Them
Drizzt Do'Urden and his arch-nemesis, Artemis Entreri, have the perfect continuous love-hate standoff for enrapturing the world in a long-standing TV series or set of movies. Stories, especially in fantasy, need hero-villain duos like this, whereby they are two sides of the same coin, and so obsessed with beating each other that they don't actually want the other to die. Typically, the villain is far more obsessed with the hero, as is the case with Entreri: the Master to Drizzt's Doctor Who; the Joker to his Batman. Entreri and Drizzt manage to reconcile during their story, making them even more fascinating.
The Legend Of Vox Machina Proves That The Time Is Right For Dungeons & Dragons TV
It Is The Right Time For A Drizzt Do'Urden TV Show
Although Paramount foolishly dropped their D&D TV show, the time has never been more right for a Dungeons & Dragons series. Amazon Prime Video's astounding The Legend of Vox Machina proves this. The animated American show, created in the style of anime, adapts the first campaign of the actual play web series Critical Role, which aired on YouTube. Called "Vox Machina", this campaign exemplified Matt Mercer's absorbing and hilarious dungeon master ability. The animated show captured this spirit while remaining accessible, avoiding confusing lore dumps.

Drizzt Do'Urden, the Dark Elf of Dungeons & Dragons fame, is overdue for a TV show or movie, with certain actors seeming suitable for the role.
The Legend of Vox Machina, importantly, was marketed in its own right, rather than as "Dungeons & Dragons." That is why so many people watched it and connected with it. D&D is about getting together with friends and saving the world, not about abstract myths that the uninitiated struggle to grasp. The Legend of Vox Machina proved this, but Drizzt and his enemy can take this to the next level. They are the perfect focus for a multi-season Dungeons & Dragons live-action TV show, which is the best way to sink into this world and its huge modern relevance.
