In the wellness world, wading through a never-ending pool of stuff claiming to make you healthier, shinier or both often leads to the conclusion that the best wellness products are often whatever you'll end up using the most. For the last several years, one of those products in my daily routine has been a plain ol' jar of organic, unrefined coconut oil.
The 365 Whole Foods brand, which is owned by Amazon, is currently offering this coconut oil on sale for October Prime Day at $9. While this is just a 10% discount, for an organic, unrefined jar of the stuff, that's a pretty good price.
Some claim cold-pressed may be better for the skin as it may've retained more nutrients after being processed, which is why I'm highlighting this one, but I don't have a preference on brand so long as it's unrefined. The jar I currently have at home is the Dr. Bronner's brand, which is organic, unrefined and expeller-pressed instead of cold. There's no Dr. Bronner's sale right now, but if you're anti-Amazon, you can buy it directly from Dr. Bronner's site for $12.
I started my coconut oil journey in college after hearing some mixed but enticing claims about its benefits for skin, hair and overall health. Each day for a short period of time, yet one longer than I'd like to admit, I'd wrap up a small portion of coconut oil with me to campus to add to my cheap convenience-store coffee.

I no longer do that -- the amount of work it requires, combined with the fact I got burnt out on the taste of coconut, overpowered any minimal or questionable health benefits of eating dabs of coconut oil. Instead, I use it most days when I'm applying mascara and need to remove some -- coconut oil seamlessly takes off any black smudge around my eyes when it's been dipped with a cotton swab. On the occasion I wear water-proof anything or have a stubborn bit of makeup on, it works wonders for that too.
I also use a small amount of coconut oil after shaving, and before applying regular moisturizer, to reduce the risk of skin irritation or ingrown hairs.
I will note that some people have reported breaking out after using coconut oil to remove makeup on their face -- I only use it for eye makeup removal and use a regular face wash at the end of the day, so I can't speak for spreading it on your whole face. I should also emphasize that a little bit goes a long way, especially pre-lotion or on a Q-tip, so use it sparingly and a full jar should last you a very, very long time.
