When it comes to modern films, you can make an argument that Sandra Bullock has been one of the most influential actresses in the past three decades. She's been nominated for numerous awards for her work, and in 2010, Time Magazine named her one of the most influential people in the world, a giant accomplishment that speaks to her fantastic acting talents. Bullock first made her acting debut with a small role in 1987's Hangmen; but it wasn't until her scene-stealing role as Lenina Huxley in the 1993 sci-fi action film Demolition Man that she started to receive some serious notice from Hollywood directors.
From that point on, her star power only rose, and not only because she could play a kick-ass character in action films, but also thanks to her roles in some of the best romantic comedies in the modern era. Her witty and charming personality really meshes well within the genre, and that's what we want to look at with this piece, the rom-coms that Bullock elevated with her tremendously talented acting. So, without further ado, let's look at the rom-coms starring Sandra Bullock that we consider absolute masterpieces.
1 'The Lost City' (2022)
Image via Paramount PicturesWhat happens when you pair a romance novelist with the model of one of her books? Well, sparks, of course. Directed by Aaron and Adam Nee, The Lost City was a tantalizingly great action-adventure movie filled with danger and love. Bullock stars as Loretta Sage, a former archaeologist who now writes romance-adventure novels which feature Dr. Angela Lovemore, her star book character, alongside her romantic interest, Dan McMahon, who is modeled by Alan Caprison (Channing Tatum). Unbeknownst to them, the two must meet a billionaire who wants to use her knowledge as an archeologist to find a lost city.
While the film is classified as an action-adventure comedy, the budding romance between Sage and McMahon is a central premise of the plot. It was sweet watching this budding romance come together, giving it a rom-com feel in a movie that wasn't made to be one. It goes to show you that, sometimes, the best rom-coms aren't really designed to be rom-coms. Instead, it can blossom in other forms, which makes The Lost City a spiritual masterpiece of the subgenre.
2 'Two Weeks Notice' (2002)
Image via Warner Bros.Rom-coms in the early 2000s were all about trying to put two people from opposite ends of the personality spectrum together. That's the feeling that you get when you watch Two Weeks Notice, a rom-com that puts two people who, in real life, wouldn't be caught dead with each other, on a collision course for comedic love.
Bullock stars as Lucy Kelson, an idealistic, liberal lawyer who goes to work for George Wade (Hugh Grant), a billionaire who doesn't act to the highest moral standard. He's arrogant and needy, but Kelson needs Wade as his wealth could be put to good use, especially when it comes to the old Coney Island community center. But, as with any rom-com, especially one from the 2000s, the sparks do indeed fly, and the liberal lawyer and the arrogant developer find a way to make love work. Two Weeks Notice is a bit cheesy compared to today's rom-coms, but it's such a sweet movie, and the chemistry between Bullock and Grant is electric, as you truly do buy into the romance.
3 'The Proposal' (2009)
Image via Touchstone PicturesWhile immigration is a political hot potato today, it wasn't as much in 2009. So there was room for a hit rom-com film to center around a woman who is looking to avoid deportation by marrying a U.S. citizen. That movie was 2009's The Proposal, which stars Bullock as Margaret Tate, an editor-in-chief at a New York City publishing company who faces being sent back to Canada after her work visa expires.
In order to stay in the U.S. and keep her job, she turns to Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) to be her fiancée in order to obtain a green card. The chemistry between Reynolds and Bullick is fantastic. A successful rom-com is getting the audience to believe in the love story of its central protagonists, and The Proposal succeeded in that mission. While critics at the time had mixed feelings about the movie, it's since become a cult classic, and a masterpiece in Bullock's rom-com portfolio.
4 'Practical Magic' (1998)
Image via Warner Bros.Witches have long been a pillar of the fantasy genre for quite some time, but in 1998, we got a fantasy film that was mixed in with the rom-com format, and the end result was Practical Magic, starring Bullock and Nicole Kidman as two sisters who come from a long line of witches. While being a witch may seem cool, their magic has instead become a curse, and finding love is quite difficult in that whoever falls in love with one of the Owen sisters is doomed to death. That's pretty rough.
This is where the rom-com elements of Practical Magic come into play. We see the sisters trying desperately to avoid the curse, and we all celebrated when Sally Owens (Bullock) was finally able to find love and not be subjected to the curse. So while Practical Magic is technically a fantasy movie, it's one that's very steeped in the rom-com ethos that fans of the genre would love. Plus, who doesn't love a little magic to go along with their romantic plot?
5 'Forces of Nature' (1999)
Image via DreamWorks PicturesSeeing Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck on the screen together just has to make your heart melt. They were at the forefront of the 1999 rom-com Forces of Nature, directed by Bronwen Hughes, which should be more beloved than what it is today. The movie follows two people who begin a relationship after their plane to Savannah has a freak accident.
By bonding together, the two overcome numerous obstacles in order to make it to their destination by the time they're both supposed to arrive. As you know, along the way, a romance sparks up, and it was this romance, along with the surreal misadventures both Bullock and Affleck had to overcome, that makes Forces of Nature one of Bullock's best rom-coms. Granted, the critics had mixed reviews of the film, but there is so much more to love about this sweet film. The best aspect of rom-coms is how resilient they are to the changing taste of time. No matter which year you watch, a rom-com will always be relevant, and Forces of Nature fit this description perfectly.
6 'Two If by Sea' (1996)
Image via Warner Bros."One if by land, two if by sea." That's the quote that’s often associated with the ride of Paul Revere. So, why would a part of that quote be perfect for a rom-com movie title? We're not sure, but what we do know is that Two If by Sea, directed by Bill Bennett, was a great romantic comedy. Starring Bullock and Denis Leary (who also co-wrote the film), the movie finds our two protagonists as a blue-collar couple who bicker over a high-stakes art heist.
Yes, you read that correctly. This is a rom-com that features an art heist. Remember when I said earlier that the best aspect of a rom-com is how well it fits into other genres and storylines? This is a prime example of my argument. Two If by Sea is an unlikely film that gets the vibe of the rom-com. It's romantic, but it's also hilarious at the same time. This movie didn't do well at the box office when it was released, but in retrospect, this is an underrated gem that would definitely make modern fans of rom-coms happy.
7 'While You Were Sleeping' (1995)
OK, we're here, the movie that inspired us to create this piece. While searching for a movie to watch one night, I stumbled upon While You Were Sleeping, a 1995 rom-com starring Bullock and Bill Pullman, and to say I was excited when I saw it was available on Disney+ is the understatement of the decade. Simply put, While You Were Sleeping is one of my favorite rom-coms of all-time, and it's easily one of the best of the '90s.
The movie follows Bullock as Lucy, a token collector in Chicago who meets the brother (Pullman) of a man she saves. From there, the sparks fly between the two, and, let me tell you, the sparks sure do fly. While You Were Sleeping is Exhibit A of what a rom-com should be. It's a feel-good film with two characters who you can't help but root for to have a heartfelt romantic relationship. While speaking on themes of family and loneliness, the movie also speaks about finding love in unexpected places and unexpected times. You never know when love is going to strike. It could come while you're shopping for groceries, or while you're saving a transit customer from being run over by a train. Cupid can strike at any moment, and we all need to be prepared for it. No wonder it was a box office hit, and today, While You Were Sleeping is arguably considered a rom-com masterpiece.
