“There Was Good In Him:” Castlevania Just Made Dracula’s Death Even More Heartbreaking 7 Years Later

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Castlevania: Nocturne season 2.

Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 reveals what Alucard really thought about Dracula and how he felt about killing his father, making the events of Castlevania’s “For Love” episode even more heartbreaking. While Dracula is often portrayed as the ultimate villain – including in the Castlevania games – Netflix’s animated show decided to frame him as a tragic character. We are introduced to Dracula in Castlevania’s first episode through the eyes of Lisa, who not only believed he had the potential to do good but also helped the Dark Lord look at humanity differently.

Lisa’s death in Castlevania episode 1 set the events of the show in motion, with Dracula unleashing his power a year later to get revenge on humanity. Hopeless, depressed, and secretly seeking to die, Dracula had nothing else left other than his war. The first two seasons of Castlevania saw Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades teaming up with Alucard to stop Dracula and his army from wiping out humanity, which culminated in an epic battle in Dracula’s castle. Arguably Castlevania’s best episode, “For Love” ended with Alucard killing his father, a moment that has become even sadder after Castlevania: Nocturne.

Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 Reveals Alucard Knew There Was Still Good In Dracula

Alucard Talked To Maria About Dracula In Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2

When asked by Maria about what it was like having a vampire father, Alucard thoughtfully talked about Dracula and how “there was good in him.” After seeing Alucard viciously trying to stop his father in the first two seasons of Castlevania, seeing him address Dracula with such care and even respect in Castlevania: Nocturne 2 felt like a full-circle moment. Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 is set three centuries after Castlevania, although an immortal like Alucard must perceive the passage of time differently. Regardless, the fact Alucard knew there was still good in Dracula makes it all more heartbreaking.

Alucard is over 336 years old in Castlevania: Nocturne.

Dracula was the head of an army of vampires that committed the most horrifying atrocities during Castlevania’s first two seasons. However, whereas Carmilla and her allies were defined by greed and the wish to rule over humanity, Dracula was portrayed as a tragic antagonist who secretly wanted to be killed. Dracula was bound to die at the hands of Alucard, but “For Love” did not frame it as an epic victory. Instead, it was a somber moment for Alucard. His conversation with Maria in Castlevania: Nocturne season 2, episode 2 further confirms how difficult it must have been for him.

Alucard Fighting Dracula Is Still The Best Moment In Netflix’s Castlevania Franchise

“For Love” Is Arguably Castlevania’s Best Episode

Castlevania has been one of Netflix’s most consistent franchises since 2017, with all seasons of Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne delivering character moments, incredible action sequences, and some stunning visuals. However, seven years later, Castlevania season 2, episode 7, “For Love” is still the highlight of the saga. Between our trio finally assembling to take storm Dracula’s castle to Alucard’s tragic battle against his father, “For Love” could have very well been the end of Castlevania altogether. Everything great about the show was turned up to 11 in season 2’s penultimate episode.

Alucard is a reserved, quiet character, especially when compared to Trevor Belmont. As a result, it could be difficult to tell what was going on in his head during certain moments. This is why his conversation with Maria in Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 was so interesting. Maria had just found out her mother was now a vampire, and there was hardly anyone better to give her advice on how to deal with it than the son of Dracula himself. According to Alucard, he had seen men do far worse things than his father ever did.

Despite All The Tragedy, Dracula Had A Happy Ending In Castlevania

While Castlevania season 2’s final battle was tragic in the sense that Alucard had no choice but to kill his father, Dracula actually had a happy ending in Castlevania. In true Castlevania fashion, season 4 was about different groups trying to bring Vlad Tepes back from Hell. Saint Germain and others planned to resurrect both Dracula and Lisa to trap their souls into one body and create a Rebis, which would then master the Infinite Corridor. Saint Germain was secretly being manipulated by Death itself, who wanted a replacement for Dracula and the number of deaths he could cause.

Netflix Just Released The Perfect Show To Watch If You Miss Castlevania

Audiences who miss Castlevania on Netflix can now check out another animated series on the streamer, which is reminiscent of the game adaptation.

Thanks to Trevor Belmont, not only was the Ribis defeated, but the souls of Vlad and Lisa were released. It is unclear what exactly happened to their souls after that, but the fact is that both Dracula and Lisa were brought back to life in their original bodies. Castlevania ended with the Vlads finally getting to live happily ever after. Unfortunately, Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 doesn’t reveal what happened to them in those 300 years and whether Alucard ever reconnected with his parents. Lisa is most likely dead since she was human, whereas Dracula could still be around.
