How does March Madness work?

Some earn automatic spots by winning their conference tournaments, while others receive at-large selections chosen by the NCAA committee.

On Selection Sunday (March 15), the committee unveils the full bracket, revealing which teams have made the tournament and how they are seeded.

The competition then follows a knockout format, meaning one loss ends a team’s season.

It begins with the First Four, which trims the field from 68 teams to 64, before the main bracket unfolds through the first round, second round, Sweet 16, and Elite Eight.

The remaining four teams advance to the Final Four, with the winners facing off in the national championship game to decide the season’s champion.
