The wait is over: the future of The Twilight Zone is here, and it looks great. One of the best-known and most loved science fiction television shows of all time, The Twilight Zone has terrified audiences for over 60 years. Beyond being just a “scary show,” The Twilight Zone has forced audiences to reflect and think as well.

The brainchild of producer/writer Rod Serling, The Twilight Zone premiered on CBS on October 2nd, 1959 and ran for five seasons. An anthology program, The Twilight Zone, presented a new, stand-alone story every week. Serling himself wrote the bulk of the episodes, but other prominent writers, such as Richard Matheson, contributed as well. Serling also introduced them each week, providing narration that matched the unnerving events happening in front of the audience. The show launched a number of careers in Hollywood as well.

Rod Serling created something extraordinary with The Twilight Zone, and subsequent generations have rediscovered it, leading to a number of revivals over the years. The most recent Twilight Zone reboot was helmed by acclaimed horror director Jordan Peele. In 2025, IDW Publishing released a Twilight Zone comic as part of its horror-tinged IDW Dark imprint. The series was a massive success, and now the publisher has announced the franchise’s colorful future.

The publisher has lined up an all-star roster of talent for the return of The Twilight Zone. The forthcoming issue 11 will be written by Mark Russell and drawn by Victor Alpi. IDW’s solicitation for the issue reads as follows:

This issue: Writer Mark Russell (Superman: Space Age, The Flintstones) and artistic powerhouse Victor Alpi lead you into the Twilight Zone, where scientists Roger and Tina strive to understand an alien vegetation that landed on Earth. But as the vegetation grows to cover the Earth and threaten humanity, their research will take on a dire importance. Tell us, dear reader — what would you sacrifice to save humanity? And when would you need to save only yourself?

Future issues of The Twilight Zone will see creators such as Tyler Boss and Jared Cullum contribute stories. IDW has not announced any further plans beyond issue 16.

IDW Honors the Spirit of The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone is one of the most influential shows in television history. According to legend, Rod Serling was growing frustrated with network censors mangling his stories. Serling, who had already gained a reputation for intelligent, thought-provoking stories, sought to challenge audiences further, yet the social mores and practices of the time were a hindrance. Much like Gene Roddenberry with Star Trek, Serling dressed his allegories up in a science fiction guise, making it easier to squeak past the censors.

Later generations of writers have taken the concept and made it their own, and IDW is doing this with its Twilight Zone series.

Later generations of writers have taken the concept and made it their own, and IDW is doing this with its Twilight Zone series. The book respects the tradition Serling established: the creators craft “one and done” stories that pierce right to the heart of the human condition. The talent IDW has assembled is perfect for taking fans on a trip to The Twilight Zone: Mark Russell has written some of the most intelligent comics today, such as his revisionist take on The Flintstones. Tyler Boss’ Dead Dogs Bite would have earned Serling’s approval.

The Twilight Zone was never content to rest on its laurel, constantly reinventing itself for a new crop of audiences. IDW’s The Twilight Zone is doing the same. The publisher will be bringing color to the title, breaking with the black and white motif of previous installments. Yet just being in color is not enough: there needs to be great writing and art to back it up, and IDW has ensured this by bringing in some of the best creators working today, ensuring The Twilight Zone’s future is bright.
