‘The Uprising’ Trailer: Andrew Garfield Rebels Against King Richard II in Paul Greengrass’ Latest Historical Drama

3 hours ago 8

Paul Greengrass has seemingly never encountered a true story that he didn’t want to dramatize. The British director has made films about many of the most dramatic historical events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including the Falklands War (“Resurrected”), the Troubles of Northern Ireland (“Bloody Sunday”), the 9/11 attacks (“United 93”), the Iraq War (“Green Zone”), Somali pirate kidnappings (“Captain Phillips”), the 2011 Norway attacks (“22 July”), and the 2018 Camp Fire evacuations (“The Lost Bus”). And for his next directorial effort, “The Uprising,” Greengrass is going further back into the past than ever before.

The new film stars Andrew Garfield as Wat Tyler, the leader of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt that saw poor Englishmen rebel against King Richard II in the aftermath of the Black Death. Per an official synopsis, Garfield plays “the legendary leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. As war burns across England, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival.”

Garfield will be joined by an ensemble cast that includes Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston, and Sky Yang. In addition to Greengrass, the film is produced by Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, and Lars Sylvest.

It’s shaping up to be a busy fall for Garfield, who also has another leading role as Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino’s AI satire “Artificial.” That film, which was financed by Amazon MGM, was recently sold to Neon soon after Amazon struck a $50 billion web services deal with OpenAI. The actor stars in the upcoming family film “The Magic Faraway Tree,” which hits U.S. theaters in August.

Greengrass is expected to follow “The Uprising” by directing the original action film “Test Drive” for 20th Century. He was also recently attached to direct “Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421” for Warner Bros., though there have been no updates on that project amid the studio’s planned merger with Paramount.

Focus Features is set to release “The Uprising” in theaters on Friday, September 11. Watch the trailer below.
