‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ CinemaCon Tease: Michael B. Jordan Remakes a Classic

How do you follow an Oscar win for Best Actor? If you’re Michael B. Jordan, you get back in the director’s chair. The “Sinners” star’s next project is a remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” the 1968 heist classic that saw Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in a romantically charged game of cat-and-mouse between a millionaire who steals for fun and an investigator determined to bring him down. Jordan takes over the role made famous by McQueen in the film that serves as his sophomore directorial effort after the blockbuster success of “Creed III.”

Audiences at CinemaCon were treated to a first look at the film during Amazon MGM’s presentation on Wednesday night. After a gorgeous performance from composer Jon Batiste alone at a piano to lead into the trailer, Jordan came out to introduce the film, which Amazon MGM clearly sees as its biggest tentpole of 2027, putting it in the same slot as “Project Hail Mary.”

Jordan said he saw the 1999 “Thomas Crown Affair,” describing the character as “smart, sophisticated, and always three steps ahead.” And after seeing Steve McQueen’s version from 1968, “that’s when I really understood what ‘Thomas Crown’ was. He brought this effortless cool to everything he did.”

The trailer for the film was perfectly stylish and sexy, the kind of old fashioned caper that we don’t always see at the movies anymore. It showed Jordan as the world class art thief, effortlessly scaling a building and stealing a classic Van Gogh painting, then leading his co-star Adria Arjona into his penthouse full of the exotic and priceless art work. She too was on hand on the CinemaCon stage in Vegas.

Jordan’s “Thomas Crown Affair” remake is written by Drew Pearce. In addition to Jordan, the film also stars Adria Arjona, Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Aubrey Plaza, Danai Gurira, and Ruth Negga.

“The Thomas Crown Affair” is currently slated for a theatrical release on March 5, 2027.
