The surging horror movie hit of 2024 is now succeeding on streaming, too. With the year nearing its end, 2024 has been a great year for horror movies, with Alien: Romulus emerging as arguably the biggest hit of the year with over $350 million at the box office. A Quiet Place: Day One also capitalized on the established popularity of a franchise and pulled in over $260 million. On the lower-budget side of the spectrum, Blumhouse released several hits – such as Speak No Evil, Imaginary, and Night Swim – even if they all didn't resonate with critics.

Some of the year's most unique and unforgettable horror hits have come from indie film, including Longlegs starring Nicolas Cage, which leveraged a masterful marketing campaign to make over $100 million at the box office. Another unexpected success has been the unrated Terrifier 3 which, made on a minuscule budget of $2 million, made nearly $80 million at the box office. Other indie horror hits this year – whether critically, commercially, or both – have been Late Night With the Devil, In a Violent Nature, Cuckoo, Strange Darling, Oddity, and The Substance.

The Substance Continues To Succeed On Streaming

It's The Second Most-Watched Movie On Reelgood's Charts

The surging horror movie hit of 2024, The Substance, is now succeeding on streaming, too. Written and directed by the French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, who gained recognition in 2017 with her debut feature Revenge, her new body horror film follows a fading celebrity who takes a black market drug to create a younger and more beautiful version of herself, although there are some unexpected side effects. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley lead The Substance cast alongside Dennis Quaid.

What The Substance's Streaming Success Means For The Movie

It Continues To Surge

This past May, the horror movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where Fargeat won Best Screenplay, and The Substance reviews praised the film as boldly outrageous and devilishly sharp, featuring a standout performance from Demi Moore and representing a jaw-dropping achievement from writer-director. It was released in theaters in September and, on a mid-sized $17.5 million budget, made over $47 million at the box office. The horror movie is continuing to surge by seeing success on streaming, which is especially impressive on Mubi, a service with far fewer subscribers than Netflix and others.
