The super woke popstar who doesn't like people looking at her: Why Chappell Roan risks being cancelled after diva outbursts and celeb spats - with star urged to 'quit fame' after 'aggressive' team left Jude Law's daughter in tears

It's been a mere two years since Chappell Roan burst onto the showbiz scene in 2024 with her hit single Good Luck, Babe! 

Yet despite being relatively new to the industry, Chappell has proven that she isn't your typical pop princess, making a name for herself as a result of her 'diva' outbursts and series of spats. 

In fact, the super woke Gen-Z icon has become something of a 'anti-popstar' after continuously lamenting the pitfalls of fame, accusing fans of not respecting her boundaries, and threatening to quit the industry entirely. 

Such has been the torrent of complaints, that Chappell has been nicknamed 'Chappell Moan' by critics, with former fans urging her to leave the industry if she can't handle it. 

Just this month, Chappell has found herself at the centre of two controversies, first after an outburst at fans in Paris, and again after her security team allegedly left Jude Law's daughter in tears during an altercation in Brazil. 

Now, Chappell risks being cancelled by the fans who have supported her, after she took offence to being approached by or looked at by fans - which she has deemed harassment. 

By alienating her fans, Chappell could be gearing up to cancel herself - a surprising move for a star whose what appeared to be an overnight success story was actually a long time coming.

An aspiring musician from the small town of Willard, Missouri, Chappell - real name Kayleigh Amstutz - spent years trying to break into the pop industry.

Beginning her graft as a teenager, Chappell tried in vain to make it into the big leagues, travelling to New York and landing a deal with Atlantic Records, only to be dropped after her debut EP was a pop flop. 

Yet refusing to let her setbacks refine her, Chappell kept going and eventually found global success with the release of her single Good Luck, Babe! which reached the top five in several international music charts. 

After her breakthrough single, Chappell's star continued to rise, with the singer booking Coachella, being named Best New Artist at the 2025 Grammys, and making her 2023 album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess a late entry to number 1 on the UK albums chart. 

Now, however, Chappell has turned on the fans that helped build her success after instructing that they give her a wide berth when she's not performing. 

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast last year, Chappell mused: 'I think people are scared of me. I think I made a big enough deal about not talking to me that people do not talk to me. 

'I've been with friends who are artists and when they're with me, they're like, "It's a forcefield around us. People don't come up to me if I'm with you."

'I'm just like, "Damn, baby, you say it too". You say, "Don't touch me, don't look at me, don't talk to me, I don't know who you are...' and they won't come to bother you."'

Two weeks ago, several fans were on the receiving end of one Chappell's viral outbursts after she filmed herself confronting the group who had allegedly been following her around the French capital. 

The video, filmed by an onlooker, showed Chappell saying she felt 'disregarded as a human'  after being approached by fans. 

'I'm just trying to go to dinner, and I've asked these people several times to get away from me,' she says. Chappell then focused on one fan who continued to ask for an autograph.

The musician said: 'This person I've asked several times to go away, and they will not… They're hiding their face, because they're ashamed.'

Boy George then weighed in on Chappell's self-imposed boundaries with fans, insisting the singer should 'own your fame and cheer up'. 

Writing on X, the Karma Chameleon hitmaker penned: 'It's probably not helpful but I have been doing this fame thing for a while and you learn slowly and painfully that you don't get a free pass once you turn yourself into a bird of paradise.'

'I watched @ChappellRoan filming the paps in Paris and I laughed because I have kicked off at them many times. The trick is to own your fame.'

'Yes, it's annoying at times but so is being ignored and told you're a "has-been". Life is always now and I think Chappell looks great but cheer up girl.'

'The world is at your feet stop kicking it! It takes so much more time to say no to a picture or a signature. Boundaries are boring. Break them with the magic of kindness!'

Chappell did not respond to Boy George's criticism but found herself in hot water again last weekend after an alleged altercation between her security team. 

On Saturday, footballer Jorginho took to Instagram to claim his stepdaughter Ada, who wife Catherine Harding shares with actor Jude, was threatened by the singer's bodyguard after the 11-year-old spotted the star in the same hotel in Brazil. 

Amid a huge backlash the singer responded in a video insisting it was not her personal security and she did not ask anyone to approach the child.

However, the apology has not gone down well with Ada's mother Catherine, nor with many social media users, who have been quick to point out Chappell's lengthy history of scandals. 

Quickly after she hit the big time, Chappell said she was already 'tired' of the attention that comes with mainstream breakthrough – particularly when she's 'not in work mode' and 'clocked out'. 

While her relationship with her adoring fans typically depends on where she is, how she is feeling at the time and what she is doing.

As a result, her diva antics have sparked debate online over whether the fast-rising star is being a prima donna or simply just concerned for her safety.

Chappell has even threatened to quit fame if it becomes 'too dangerous', with some fans defending she just wants to be 'an artist, not a celebrity'.

In 2024 the hitmaker slammed fans for 'harassing' her and 'stalking' behavior and said she doesn't 'give a f***' if that makes her 'selfish'.

She discussed dealing with attention on an episode of The Comment Section podcast and said at the time she had 'pumped the brakes' on fame.

'People have started to be freaks, like, [they] follow me and know where my parents live, and where my sister works,' she told host Drew Afualo. 'All this weird s***.'

Chappell explained that she had made a promise to herself that she would stop making music if fans gave her 'stalker vibes' or made her family feel as if they were in any 'danger.'

She later stood by her stance on Instagram in a six page statement, she then turned off comments because 'this isn’t a group conversation.'

 In a lengthy statement, she wrote, 'I'm not afraid of the consequences for demanding respect.'

The singer added: 'This isn't a new situation. Why is a girl expressing her fears and boundaries so infuriating?'

'For the past 10 years I've been going non-stop to build my project and it's come to the point that I need to draw lines and set boundaries.'

'I don't agree with the notion that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time, or attention to people I do not know, do not trust, or who creep me out - just because they're expressing admiration.' 

Shortly afterwards, Chappell has left fans seething at her 'unprofessionalism' after cancelling a string of shows on her European tour with just days notice.

The American singer came under fire after she announced that she was cancelling her Paris and Amsterdam gigs that were due to take place the following week.

Taking to X, she shared: 'Due to scheduling conflicts, I have had to make the extremely hard decision to cancel my Paris and Amsterdam shows.

'I have rescheduled my Berlin show to 23 September. I am so sorry & very disappointed :( I promise I will be back. I’m heartbroken. thank you for understanding.'

She later added: 'Ticket holders for Paris and Amsterdam – refund will come from point of purchase. Berlin, your tickets will be automatically transferred over to the new date.'

It was the third cancellation made in a matter of days, after also pulling out of the lineup for Lollapalooza Berlin and Superbloom.

Fans were not impressed by the announcement as they revealed they had been left thousands of pounds out of pocket by the last minute decision.

Some had travelled from around the world for the gigs, with one irate fan tweeting that they'd seen the post after flying into Berlin especially for the show.

Chappell appeared at the centre of backlash once again in April 2025 when she was accused of pushing her assistant on the Fashion Los Angeles Awards red carpet.

The drama unfolded as the singer waved at fans while flanked by two companions. She then appeared to collide with her assistant before seemingly using her arm to push her away before walking off.

The assistant was seen widening her eyes in horror and flashing a wry smile after the awkward moment - although another closer angle of the incident showed a very light collision and Roan gently pushing her assistant away.

Last year, Chappell and her team made sure history didn't repeat itself with a new set of rules for the red carpet.

In order to prevent a scene from the Grammy winner at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, a red-carpet attendant cautioned photographers to tread carefully before Roan's appearance.

'Okay, Chappell's coming. No one yell at her or she will leave,' the woman can be heard saying in the video. 'Be quiet, be nice, smiley.'

Some photographers laughed at the instruction, but it appeared to have its intended effect.

When Chappell stepped onto the carpet rocking, she was greeted with an unusually calm and respectful press line.

The pre-event warning came after Chappell's past red-carpet blowups went viral.

At the 2024 MTV VMAs, she famously clashed with a photographer who shouted 'shut the f**k up' by snapping back, 'You shut the f**k up - not me, b**ch.'

Then, at the premiere of Olivia Rodrigo: Guts World Tour, the star confronted the photographer and accused him of being 'disrespectful' toward her at the Grammys.

'You were so rude to me,' she told him. 'And I deserve an apology for that. You need to apologise to me.'

Given that history, fans immediately understood why her team might be setting ground rules this time around.

She has also been accused of diva antics on the road. 

The Australian leg of Chappell's tour reportedly had a set-up so elaborate that it left some seasoned festival insiders doing double takes.

Sources told the Daily Mail last month that Chappell came to Australia with a formidable entourage of no less than 28 people for the five-date run. 

And Chappell's retinue was much more than roadies and security staff.

Insiders claimed that her inner circle included close friends, family members, hair and make-up artists, fashion stylists and creative collaborators.

'People were genuinely shocked,' one source claimed.

'You just don't usually see an entourage that size on a festival run. Especially for someone still considered a relatively new global breakout.'

However, while the scale of Chappell's travelling roadshow raised some eyebrows, it also sparked admiration from some festival veterans.

'She runs it like a pop dynasty,' the insider added. 'It's very deliberate and very controlled.'

The extent of the operation became especially clear during her Gold Coast stop, where facilities were dramatically reconfigured to cater exclusively to the star and her team.

At Southport Sharks – the venue for the Gold Coast leg of Laneway – Chappell reportedly shut down an entire gymnasium and yoga studio to be transformed into a private green room for the pop star and her impressive entourage.

And her makeshift digs were fitted out with all the mod cons any self-respecting pop star could wish for.

'These weren't just basic rooms with a couch,' the source said.

'They were roped off, styled and fully stocked: food, alcohol, everything you could think of.'

Dedicated runners were assigned to manage the group, while Chappell herself was kept separate from other festival artists, who used standard green rooms elsewhere on site.

After her lengthy history of outbursts, there has been a divide about whether she is right to call out her fans or whether she is being entitled. 

The likes of Miley Cyrus have publicly defended Chappell. 

Miley revealed in 2024 that she had reached out to the rising star to offer support, and explained: 'I wish people would not give her a hard time.

'It's probably really hard coming into this business with phones and Instagram. That wasn't always a part of my life, and I'm not a part of it now.'

Some X users have also been quick to defend Chappell, penning: 'Why is everyone so eager to tell women to just take unwanted attention',

'Chappell Roan is actually such an excellent role model for young girls. She demands respect everywhere she goes and will fearlessly confront anyone who doesn't show her that respect. She's unapologetically herself & consistently stands up for what she believes in. Love her down!'

'Chappell roan wants to be an artist, not a celebrity'.

However, others have disagreed with Chappell's boundaries, writing: 'IDK but Chappell Roan is lame AF for treating her fans the way she does. If you didn't want fame why did you sign a deal?',

'Chappell Roan is so insufferable. She is constantly complaining about the attention she gets, not wanting to interact with fans (that stream her music and keep her bills paid btw) yet she continues to go to events, perform, do interviews, etc. 

'Like girl either accept the lifestyle that comes with being a celebrity or stfu about it. You can literally quit and get a 9-5 at any moment. Don't complain about something you are actively choosing'.

The latest star to kick at Chappell is Catherine Harding, who took umbrage at Chappell's apology over the allegations her security team left her daughter with Jude in tears. 

In a post on Sunday, Catherine shared: 'I know that Chappell has responded, saying that "It wasn't her security and that she didn't do it" well, 100% this wasn't a security guard of the hotel that's what I can say, he looks after artists,' Cat said in her video.

'Now I don't know if he's her personal security guard but he was with her, so that is all I know, did she send him to do it? again, I don't know, I would like to hope not.

'But at the same time you have a responsibility when you are a celebrity that the people who work for you and act on your behalf are acting on your behalf,'

'So would he do that if he didn't have her authority? I don't know. If he does, thats a big problem. because then he is representing her in a way she doesn't want to be represented'.

Catherine added that Chappell was right to say she 'didn't notice anything' because nothing happened and claimed all her daughter did was walk silently past the hitmaker's table.

'[My daughter] didn't have her phone, she didn't try to take a picture, she didn't do anything, she just looked at [Chappell] and smiled'.

Catherine went on to recall how a security guard, who she described as 'aggressive and intimidating' soon came over to their table and 'berated' her for being a bad parent.

'He said we should not harass people and all these other things and I did try to explain to him that she was a child and she was just excited to see an artist she liked'.

She explained to him that her daughter, who has a famous father and stepfather, understood 'boundaries' acceptable to people in the public eye, but said the security guard did not listen.

'I hope [Chappell] did not know, I hope she did not send her security over to do this. I really think she is a very very talented artist we liked her a lot we came all the way to São Paulo to watch her show,

'It was her birthday presented, she asked for tickets, it was a little bit ruined because we didn't go to the show last night but that's how it is.

'I hope that maybe if it wasn't her that maybe she learns not to allow the people who work for her not to treat people like this'.

Chappell said in her video on her Instagram Story: 'I'm gonna tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard - who is not my personal security...

'I didn't even see. I didn't even see a woman and a child. No one came up to me, no one bothered me. I was just sitting at breakfast at my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel as well. So the fact that a security guard who is...

'I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. I did not. They did not come up to me. I did not do anything. It's unfair for security to just assume someone doesn't have good intentions when they have no reason to believe it as there's no action been taken.

'I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children, like that is crazy. I am sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something.

'If you felt uncomfortable that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.'

The drama kicked off when Catherne's husband, former Chelsea and Arsenal footballer Jorginho posted a lengthy statement on Instagram on Saturday, publicly criticising Chappell's security for threatening his step-daughter.

In the post which quickly went viral he wrote: 'I went through a very upsetting situation with my family earlier today.'

'My wife (@catcavelli) is in Sao Paulo for @lollapaloozabr. This morning, my daughter woke up incredibly excited, she even made a sign because she was so happy to see an artist she really admires, or used to admire.'

He continued: 'By coincidence, they're staying at the same hotel as this artist. During breakfast, the artist walked past their table. My daughter, like any child, recognized her, got excited, and just wanted to make sure it was really her.

'And the worst part is she didn't even approach her. She simply walked past the singer's table, looked to confirm it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with her mum. She didn't say anything, didn't ask for anything.

'What happened next was completely disproportionate. A large security guard came over to their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, saying that she shouldn't allow my daughter to "disrespect" or "harass" other people.

'Honestly, I don't know at what point simply walking past a table and looking to see if someone is there can be considered harassment. He even said he would file a complaint against them with the hotel, while my 11-year-old daughter was sitting there in tears. My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot.

'I've lived with football, public exposure, and well-known people for many years, and I understand very well what respect and boundaries are. What happened there was not that. It was just a child admiring someone.

'It's sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans. At the end of the day, they are the ones who build all of this. I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child.'

Jorginho concluded: '@chappellroan WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION.'

While there is an ongoing debate about whether the Good Luck, Babe! singer is being a prima donna or just precautious when it comes to respecting her boundaries there are fears that Chappell may have gone too far this time and cancelled herself. 

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere felt so strongly about the incident that he banned Chappell from performing at the city's Todo Mundo no Rio concert in May.

He shared on X/Twitter: 'I mean that as long as I'm in charge of our city - this young lady @ChappelRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio! I doubt that Shakira would do that! 

'By the way, @FrelloJorginho your little one is already the guest of honor from the organization in May!'
