Nintendo and Illumination's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, 2026's highest-grossing film, finally has a streaming premiere date. It will become available to stream on NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service on July 30, following the movie's digital debut in May and physical release in June.
Calling The Super Mario Galaxy Movie the year's highest-grossing film is one of the few positive things that can be said about it, as critics' reviews were decidedly not glowing. The Mario Bros.' second animated outing currently sits at a 42% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Polygon was somewhat lukewarm on it, finding The Super Mario Galaxy Movie charming yet wholly empty. "Galaxy is stuffed with references to Mario games released over the past 40 years, and it relies on nostalgia and dazzling visuals to carry a paper-thin plot. The sequel is even less focused, yanking in references from across the Nintendo IP library to fill the gaps between story beats," our review said.
Nintendo fans have seemed to enjoy it, though, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes' viewer-rated PopcornMeter. That disconnect between reviewers and fans dusted off an age-old debate about kids' movies and what audiences should expect from them.
Despite its reception, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has raked in the dough. It rode a massive opening weekend toward becoming 2026's first (and, at the time of writing, only) billion-dollar box-office hit.
While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been available to rent at home for some time, soon enough you'll be able to check it out on Peacock. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad adventuring throughout the galaxy to save Rosalina from Bowser and Bowser Jr. Spectacle ensues (and Star Fox's Fox McCloud shows up).
