The Simpsons Game is once again playable on modern platforms. First released in 2007 as a tie-in with The Simpsons Movie, The Simpsons Game differs greatly from the much more challenging Simpsons: Hit and Run. The Simpsons Game followed multiple members of the titular family through a series of bizarre platforming levels.
Since then, The Simpsons Game has remained largely stuck on the platforms it originally released for: Nintendo DS, PS2, 3, and Portable, as well as Wii, and Xbox 360. Now, though, thanks to fan efforts, you can play it for the very first time on PC.
Per Dark Side of Gaming, fans have completed a recompilation project for The Simpsons Game, making the original version playable on PC. This works similarly to other recent recompilation efforts, like the Zelda: The Wind Waker recomp project, or the recomp of Dante's Inferrno, taking the source code of The Simpsons Game and running it natively on PC without relying on emulation.
The recomp can be downloaded from YesterMester on GitHub. It's totally free in and of itself, but you'll have to have your own copy of The Simpsons Game to make it work; none of the game's actual content is included.
The Simpsons Game Recompiled is specifically based on the Xbox 360 version of the game, a 3D platformer which allows you to control each member of the Simpsons family, using their special abilities to overcome a number of platforming challenges. Homer can eat various food-themed power-ups to gain different abilities, Bart can transform into Barman, Lisa can summon the Hand of Buddha or play her saxophone, Marge can influence a mob to remove obstacles, and Maggie can crawl into small spaces like vents to reveal atlernate paths forward.
This home console version of the game differs significantly from the Nintendo DS version. The handheld variant was developed separately and features side-scrolling platforming levels instead.
Because it's running natively on PC, the recomp has a number of performance improvements: you can now run the game at a native 60 FPS, compared to the original's 30. Menu screens, loading screens, and the title screen will run in their original 30 FPS, however. The game also uses an improved timer setting, which should help prevent audio issues and better handle frame pacing.
You'll have access to some graphical options, including supersampling, anisotropic filtering, FXAA, and render scaling, that'll make The Simpsons Game look better than ever with higher-resolution textures and anti-aliasing. The most recent version, 0.0.6.2, includes greater support for custom keybinding, including full mouse and keyboard controls.
The Simpsons Game Recompiled also runs on certain handheld gaming PCs, including the Steam Deck. If you're willing to go through a bit of extra setup, you can even take it on the go, running just below 60 FPS on the handheld. Whether you're nostalgic for the original, looking forward to the movie's sequel, or just wanting to check out a piece of Simpsons history, the recompilation is the perfect way to revisit The Simpsons Game.
