The SECTAURS Return: The Classic Franchise Dives Back Into Action in All-New Nacelleverse Series (Exclusive Preview)

Screen Rant is thrilled to share an exclusive preview of Sectaurs #1 – written by Dennis Culver, with art by Ramon Bachs – which kicks off the three-issue miniseries revival of the classic characters, starting with the franchise's primary protagonist, Prince Dargon.

First released as a toy line in 1985, Sectaurs was famously the subject of a limited series comic book adaptation by Marvel Comics that same year, a legacy that the creators of this new incarnation from Oni Press are proud to be building on.

Sectaurs is set to be a stellar sci-fi fantasy saga, which will continue to widen the already-ambitious world of the Nacelleverse, the unified fictional world started by Oni Press as a response to Skybound Entertainment's Energon Universe, which has had success combining G.I. Joe and Transformers into a shared, rebooted canon. The Nacelleverse is a way of bringing new life to obscure and beloved nostalgia properties alike – with Sectaurs being the latest title in the initiative to launch, from author Dennis Culver.

Culver had this to say about the project:

I'm beyond thrilled to help Nacelle and Oni reinvent SECTAURS for the 21st Century! The Warriors of Symbion are like nothing you've ever seen before in comics. It's GAME OF THRONES, but with BUGS instead of dragons!

Described as "fast-rising star" by Oni Press, Culver is one of several authors faced with the exciting task of taking characters with recognizable designs, but minor pop culture footprints beyond that, and offering the definitive take on them for a new generation of comic book fans. Sectaurs is set to have a prominent place in the overall trajectory of the Nacelleverse, meaning that this three-issue miniseries is sure to be jam-packed with lore and full of action that will have long-ranging consequences.

SECTAURS, From Oni Press, Carries On The Legacy Of The Underrated '80s Marvel Series

As Hunter Gorinson, Oni Press's President and Publisher, noted in the company's press release ahead of Sectaurs #1's debut, the impact of the '80s Sectaurs series from Marvel Comics has not been forgotten. Gorinson explained:

Of the many beloved properties in the NacelleVerse, SECTAURS holds a special place of reverence for anyone who was first introduced to these characters in the pages of their original Marvel Comics series by legendary creators Bill Mantlo and Mark Texeira. It’s a huge joy to see them return to life in spectacularly raucous and rousing fashion at the hands of Dennis Culver and Ramon Bachs – two creators with a penchant for fusing sci-fi, fantasy, and high-flying heroics into pure comic book spectacle.

While the Oni Press series won't be directly connected to the Marvel iteration of Sectaurs, the creative team of Culver and Bachs will have the earlier title as the bar they hope to live up to – and quickly surpass, as it carves out an entirely new, contemporary narrative from the baseline of the franchise's existing mythology.

Several decades after the influential publisher was shuttered, Oni Press revives EC Comics to publish a new wave of titles with an all-star line-up.

That fondness for the Marvel series, and the original Sectaurs toy line, will be a jumping off point for the series, but it can be expected to push beyond what fans already know about the characters in short order. The preview for Sectaurs #1 hints at this, effectively layering exposition and intrigue as the miniseries reintroduces the franchise's setting and primary characters, while setting up overarching plots and mysteries that will likely continue to play out beyond this initial series' three issues.

According to Nacelle CEO and Founder Brian Volk-Weiss:

Sectaurs is an important piece of the overall Nacelleverse story and we’re thrilled to finally be able to kick off that exhilarating tale with our friends at Oni Press. We want to honor the rich history of Sectaurs, and issue #1 is a major first step in that direction.

His mention of the "overall Nacelleverse story" is especially intriguing; while the individual pieces of the shared continuity have steadily started to fall into place, how they will come together for a grand unified narrative is not yet clear. However, now readers know that Sectaurs will have a pivotal role to play in the progression of that plot, as well as the more general project of nurturing a sustainable fictional universe for all of these franchises to operate within for a long time to come.

Nacelle and Oni Press have committed to a patient path forward with the Nacelleverse.

A new era for Sectaurs is just the latest, greatest chapter in the Nacelleverse, which has only just begun to pay off on the thrilling premise of bringing series like this – and Biker Mice From Mars, Power Lords, RoboForce, and more – all together into a universe teeming with action and adventure. Nacelle and Oni Press have committed to a patient path forward with the Nacelleverse, but as more and more familiar characters begin to populate it, readers can be assured that the intensity and the drama will likewise continue to heat up exponentially.
