In an interview with Digital Spy, showrunner Patrick McKay confirmed The Rings of Power season 3 is when Sauron will forge the One Ring in the fires of Mordor's volcano. As seen in The Lord of the Rings, the One Ring is used to control those who wear the other Rings, allowing Sauron's corruptive influence to spread across Middle-earth. The beginnings of this campaign are going to play out across season 3 as it continues.
But this also confirms that, despite the numerous storylines The Rings of Power juggles, it's still a story about Sauron at its core. His rise to power has been documented since season 1, where he pretended to be the lost king Halbrand to gain Galadriel's trust. In season 2, his forging of the original Rings of Power was the core plot, something that continued to build as the season progressed.
Now, season 3 promises that he'll finally be one step closer to the ruler of Mordor he is in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Peter Jackson's subsequent movie adaptations. While his rise to power is only just beginning, the history of the Second Age also offers clues as to what can be expected for the rest of the show.
The Rings Of Power's Next 3 Seasons Will Be More Focused On Sauron, According To Second Age Lore
Second Age lore dictates that Sauron will not only be the focus of The Rings of Power season 3, but the rest of the show's planned five-season storyline. Once he forges the One Ring, he slowly encroaches his corruptive influence across Middle-earth, making those who wear the Rings, especially the rulers of Man, his servants. The battle that ensues will no doubt be how the series comes to a close.
For now, though, the major focus on Sauron will be a defining moment of The Rings of Power season 3, proving once and for all that the villain is the main character of the Middle-earth series. Although the show will continue to delve into the lives of its character ensemble and the changes Mordor and Sauron make to the world, the Dark Lord is the series' main character, and will no doubt continue to be the core focus throughout the show.
