The first The Purge movie kept its nightmare inside a wealthy family’s home. Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey played parents whose expensive security system was supposed to protect them during America’s annual night of legalized crime, until helping someone outside made their house a target. The sequels opened the doors and showed just how much worse things could get for people who couldn’t afford that protection.

Across five movies and two seasons of television, the franchise found plenty of victims for its government-sanctioned bloodbath. 2021’s The Forever Purge took the premise to its logical breaking point, with killers deciding they didn’t need to stop when their allotted time expired. The title alone made a convincing argument that this particular American experiment had gone beyond fixing.

Now, The Purge is getting an original comic from writer Dan Watters and artist Juan José Ryp, arriving in late 2027. The project will launch Blumhouse’s new partnership with IDW Publishing’s horror imprint, IDW Dark. That puts another confirmed installment on the calendar for fans, although this return will take place on the page.

Watters’ credits include Batman: Dark Patterns and TMNT: Shredder, while Ryp has illustrated titles including Wolverine: Blood Hunt. Their assignment gives them an entire country’s worth of potential horror to explore. The announcement promises a new chapter, leaving room for a story that doesn’t simply retrace one of the movies. Watters was already interested in the franchise before taking the job. Speaking in a recent interview, the writer explained that horror was his introduction to comics and fandom, and that The Purge immediately came to mind when Blumhouse’s properties entered the conversation. IDW Dark lead editor Heather Antos has also met with filmmakers behind the participating franchises as the publisher develops its new stories.

The appeal of this setting is how little a new story needs to borrow from the existing cast. Someone trying to get home from work could experience an entirely different night from someone watching behind reinforced windows. The movies have already used that divide to move between home-invasion horror and larger action stories, giving the comic several directions to pursue. Which direction Watters and Ryp will take remains under wraps. The announcement hasn’t revealed a synopsis, lead characters, or where the story falls in the timeline, and an exact release date is still to come.

Readers can expect The Purge to begin Blumhouse’s IDW Dark lineup in late 2027, with more details needed before anyone knows whose door the killers will reach first.
