The Precinct Is Uncomfortably Tense in ‘Chicago P.D.’ Midseason 12 Premiere Images

1 day ago 9

Chicago P.D. and the rest of the One Chicago lineup return on Wednesday, January 8. Our first look at the upcoming episode, titled “Friends and Family,” confirms what we had anticipated would happen given the current state of affairs in the Intelligence Unit. The images preview the aftermath of everyone learning about Torres’ (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) inappropriate relationship with a confidential informant and the many people his secret put in danger. The new police chief, Reid (Shawn Hatosy), is interested in how the unit operates, so he becomes a regular presence during a kidnapping case teased in Episode 9's promo video and official logline below.

“Cook (Toya Turner) turns to her family when Intelligence faces administrative roadblocks that threaten a kidnapping investigation.”

Intelligence Fractures in 'Chicago P.D.' Season 12, Episode 9.

Kidnapping cases are always time-sensitive since, with every passing minute, the chances of finding the victim alive decrease. The case puts Cook in the spotlight as she comes through for the unit when their actions are heavily scrutinized, and they can’t operate normally. Turner previously teased the show would dive into Cook’s family. The arc starts in this episode. “. . . .They’re going to dig into her background, and they’re going to get into her upbringing. They’re going to get into family dynamics, and it’s going to be nice," the actress said (via TV Line]. The episode will reveal how Cook's family influences her policing.

Cook also deals with Torres’ betrayal after he didn’t tell her about Gloria. Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is part of the whole thing since she kept his secret, and now it's out. There is a general air of tenseness in the images, as some awkwardness develops in the unit following the revelation. Chief Reid’s presence also does not help the case, as it feels like they’ve been very bad and need to be watched.

“Family and Friends” airs three weeks before the anticipated One Chicago crossover. "When a gas explosion rocks a high-rise, Chicago’s first responders come out in force to rescue hundreds of civilians. The calamity beneath the surface, however, sends our heroes on a race to save 40 people trapped deep underground, including two of their own,” reads the crossover’s official logline.

Tune in to NBC on Wednesday, January 8, at 10 p.m. to see how the show resolves these tensions amid a time-sensitive kidnapping case. Stream, past episodes on Peacock to catch up before new episodes air.
