Especially with the release of the Netflix live-action, there's been an influx of new fans, and the hunt for a One Piece successor has only intensified as fans wait for Season 3 and the manga inches closer to its conclusion in the Final Saga. That said, strange as it may sound, One Piece may already have its perfect replacement lined up in a massive franchise just as old and established as itself, and specifically in its hottest new Paramount+ spin-off.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is The Perfect Next Watch For One Piece Fans
Much like with One Piece, to a newcomer, the Star Trek franchise can definitely feel like quite an imposing challenge. The franchise has been around for decades, spanning multiple generations, retellings, remakes, and spin-offs. All of this makes it quite confusing to decide where to even get started when it comes to diving into Star Trek.
Having said that, at least as far as fans of grand adventures like One Piece go, the Star Trek franchise might just be a non-negotiable next pit stop, and there may even be the perfect starting point in its newest spin-off, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is also arguably a great entry point into the Star Trek franchise as a whole.
Why Strange New Worlds specifically? Well, long story short, it's a gorgeous, very approachable show. Working with a sizable reported budget of at least $100 million per season, Strange New Worlds screams high production value with immersive sets, very well-executed VFX and CGI, and impressive cinematography overall that would definitely appeal to fans of live-action One Piece.
Strange New Worlds And One Piece Are Much More Similar Than One Would Think
That said, beyond these surface-level appeals of the show, Strange New Worlds also bears many surprising deeper similarities to One Piece. Instead of a seafaring adventure like in One Piece, Strange New Worlds takes its Straw Hats-esque motley crew, led by Captain Pike, across the universe. Both shows also have their own affable captains in Pike and Luffy, who both command a similar unquestionable faith and trust from their crews. Furthermore, both the Straw Hats and the U.S.S. Enterprise are made up of a quirky yet memorable crew of characters with varied origins, each with their own intriguing backstories and secrets.
Building off the rest of the Star Trek franchise, Strange New Worlds, like One Piece, also features rich world-building, which includes different unique races and planets with their own cultures. And, much like the Straw Hats go from one island to another, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, as its name implies, sees the U.S.S. Enterprise venture across space, discovering new planets. The episodic nature of the series also lends to this strange sense of familiarity between the two series.
Granted, the Federation plays a much more diplomatic role in Strange New Worlds than the tyrannical World Government in One Piece. That said, Strange New Worlds still most definitely has its own larger story taking shape in the background. Most importantly, with four seasons out and a fifth on the way, fans of One Piece will definitely never run out of content to consume, especially with the whole Star Trek franchise simply waiting ahead after Strange New Worlds. And, interestingly enough, given the revelation of a civilization on the moon through Enel's cover story, One Piece itself may evolve into a Star Trek-like space voyage at some point in the future.
