More than three decades after making his debut in the first season of Mighty Morphin, Tommy Oliver (Jason David Frank) remains the defining hero of Power Rangers. Countless Rangers have followed, but Tommy's popularity and place as the spiritual center of the franchise have never been seriously challenged. The original Green Ranger continues to represent the face of Power Rangers, making every new appearance a major event.
Any Power Rangers story centered on Tommy immediately attracts attention, particularly within BOOM! Studios' acclaimed comic line. The publisher has repeatedly explored sides of the character that the Power Rangers TV show only hinted at, from the corrupted Tommy from an alternate reality, Lord Drakkon, during the Shattered Grid event to the older, battle-scarred veteran in 2018’s Soul of the Dragon graphic novel. BOOM! demonstrated that Tommy's greatest adventures aren’t limited to screens, with the Power Rangers comics arguably utilising his character much better than the show.
Now, Tommy once again headlines his own standalone adventure in Power Rangers: Green, whose first issue released on August 5. Written by Paul Allor with artwork by Gustaffo Vargas, the 2026 miniseries from BOOM! Studios imagines an alternate future where Tommy is the last surviving Ranger on Earth. However, he is far from alone. The comic also brings back one of the franchise's most iconic 1990s villains, setting the stage for one of the most unexpected partnerships in Power Rangers history.
Tommy Oliver And Goldar Are Teaming Up In A New Power Rangers Comic
Among BOOM! Studios' 2026 Power Rangers releases, Power Rangers: Green arguably takes the franchise in the boldest new direction. Rather than revisiting familiar battles like the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series or focusing on dream Ranger teams like Power Rangers Unlimited, the new Power Rangers: Green comic jumps into a bleak alternate future where Tommy has retired after becoming the last Ranger left alive. Living quietly with Alpha and his adopted family, Tommy is forced back into action when an unexpected visitor arrives asking for help.
That visitor is Goldar, one of Tommy's oldest enemies and a staple of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers era of the TV show. The fearsome warrior sees Tommy's assistance instead of trying to destroy him, immediately turning one of the franchise's longest rivalries on its head. Goldar himself has changed dramatically, sporting a battered new design that reflects years of survival in this ruined future.
The alliance is particularly compelling because Tommy and Goldar were once Rita Repulsa's two greatest weapons and rivals for her approval. Before breaking free of Rita's control, Tommy served as her ultimate Ranger-defeating champion, while Goldar had long been her most trusted general. Even after Tommy joined the Rangers and became a hero, Goldar never let go of their grudge, making their repeated clashes deeply personal throughout the original TV show and BOOM! Studios' own MMPR comics.
A future where Tommy is the final Ranger already provides an intriguing hook, but pairing him with Goldar elevates the premise even further. Few Power Rangers stories have ever asked these longtime enemies to fight side by side. That unlikely partnership gives Power Rangers: Green an identity unlike any previous Power Rangers comic or TV show storyline, making it one of the franchise's most distinctive projects in years.
The Power Rangers Comics Have Already Made Goldar A Terrifying Villain
One reason BOOM! Studios' Power Rangers comics have earned such a passionate following is how effectively they deepen the characters for the TV show. Tommy has perhaps benefited the most, with stories like Shattered Grid, Soul of the Dragon, and now Power Rangers: Green exploring emotional conflicts and mature themes that the TV series, which was always aimed primarily at younger audiences, couldn’t really touch.
No character, however, has received a greater reinvention than Goldar, even compared to the original Green Ranger himself. In the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show, Goldar was certainly dangerous, but he often functioned as little more than Rita Repulsa's loudest henchman, frequently losing to the Rangers before retreating. While memorable, he sometimes bordered on comic relief, especially in later seasons.
The BOOM! Studios comics transformed that perception completely. The on-page version of Goldar is a calculating conqueror whose battlefield experience, ruthless tactics, and overwhelming strength make him feel like a genuinely terrifying warlord instead of merely Rita's second-in-command. Rather than existing to be defeated, he is one of the Rangers' most formidable and feared recurring adversaries, capable of matching them physically while also commanding genuine respect.
