The next God of War game will reportedly feature Faye as the lead character, who we're familiar with as Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother in the recent God of War games. And the game will apparently be revealed this year and released next, during the first-half of 2027.
The information comes from respected industry leaker NateTheHate2, who also said on X that, "Gameplay is said to differ from the Norse God of War games with more of a focus on action." Perhaps this means it will be a more acrobatic and faster-paced third-person action game.
NateTheHate2 was expanding on a rumour from the weekend that said Sony Santa Monic was working on "a new franchise within the God of War universe". This statement suggests the Faye-based God of War game will be in addition to the mainline Kratos-based series, rather than instead of it. Faye is not necessarily replacing Kratos.
Faye is dead when you begin the newer God of War games, and your journey is one to scatter her ashes, though along the way you learn more about her and her surprising heritage. You also see her during tender dream sequences in God of War: Ragnarok.
God of War is having a very visible moment currently, courtesy of Amazon drip-feeding casting announcements from the in-development live-action God of War TV show. Last week Amazon gave a first glimpse of burly actor Ryan Hurst as Kratos, capturing him as he bends forwards to bark hunting instructions at his son, Atreus, who was aiming a bow.
Other notable actors in the TV series include Ed Skrein (Daario Naharis in Game of Thrones) as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (the big suited guy in Severance) as Thor, and Mandy Patinkin (Saul in Homeland) as Odin. A godly family they'll make.
Sony Santa Monica's last major God of War game was Ragnarok in 2022, so there's been time for a new game to be made. We also heard last month the studio was remaking the original God of War trilogy for PS5, and we were surprised when it shadow-dropped a side-scrolling God of War platformer, Sons of Sparta, focusing on Kratos' early life.
