Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 4!The Monsterverse has redefined the events of Kong: Skull Island nine years later in the latest episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The plot of Kong: Skull Island follows Monarch head Bill Randa organizing a government-led expedition to investigate Skull Island. At this point in the Monsteverse timeline, he's seeking evidence the island is an "emergence point" for monsters in the Hollow Earth.

Bill Randa Was Charting Titan X's Migratory Patterns All His Life

In Monarch season 2, episode 4, it's revealed that Bill began traveling the world after Keiko's supposed death, when she fell into an opening to Axis Mundi. This was partially influenced by a letter Keiko wrote to Lee, revealing the pair slept together. Distraught by this, Bill threw himself into his work, even neglecting his adopted son, Hiroshi.

This work ended up being a migration pattern for Titan X, which Lee and Keiko encountered in the 1950s during one of their investigations with Bill. He spent many years after Keiko's supposed death charting the course that Titan X takes around the world. This work seemingly continued up until his death in Kong: Skull Island.

Luckily, at the end of the latest episode, Lee, Keiko, Hiroshi, and Kentaro find Bill's map hidden in an Apex Cybernetics base. Monarch's core characters use it to determine Titan X is going to the same village where they first discovered it in the 1950s. But it also hints at how Bill's tragic fate in the Monsterverse was tied to his research.

Randa's Titan X Investigation Likely Led Him To Skull Island

Titan X's migratory pattern is exclusive to the Pacific Ocean. This is also where Skull Island is located, as established in its debut movie. Because Bill's travels led him throughout a multitude of locations in the area, it stands to reason that he discovered the Monsterverse's Skull Island while tracking the sea-faring Titan's movements around the world.

Kong: Skull Island doesn't fully clarify how Bill knows Skull Island exists, with the island having limited history. However, given Monarch's focus on hunting Titans, it's made clear he already knew it would be full of monsters before manning an expedition inside. It's something he could have only found out through whatever research he was conducting beforehand.

Because of this, it stands to reason that Titan X's movements made Bill aware of Skull Island's existence. Whether this was because it's a spot on its migratory pattern, or for a reason yet unknown, remains unclear. But it seems like Titan X may have been the catalyst that prompted Monarch's expedition in Kong: Skull Island.

Monarch Makes Bill Randa's Fate Even More Tragic

This revelation about Bill's investigation into Titan X only makes his death in Kong: Skull Island even more tragic. He neglected Hiroshi when he needed him most, leaving his son to chase down Titan X's migratory route. This decision ended up being the first domino in a long line that led to his unceremonious death on Skull Island.

What makes this all the more tragic is that, despite developing plenty of research about Titan X, most of what he did was influenced by feeling betrayed by Keiko. While he was still grieving her supposed death and Lee's disappearance, he found a letter revealing they'd slept together. That pain is what carried him forward on his mission.

Now that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has confirmed what Bill was up to right before Kong: Skull Island, it adds a new layer of tragedy to his research and death. He died without getting any answers, despite the deep connection he had to Lee and Keiko. It's a development that redefines the movie, adding new context only the show could offer.
