Ghost Rider is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way, but this includes the franchise shifting focus when it comes to the character from a previous version to one played by a major Hollywood star, once again reopening a fiery debate. Ghost Rider is one of the biggest characters of Marvel Comics' supernatural side. As such, his MCU debut makes sense.

After all, the franchise has already started to delve deeper into that corner of the MCU's slate of releases, with supernatural projects including multiple Doctor Strange movies, MCU TV shows on Disney+ like Agatha All Along, the Werewolf by Night Special Presentation, and more. Before Mahershala Ali's Blade movie was canceled, the project was expected to push forward the MCU's supernatural side.

While Ali will no longer play Blade in the MCU, rumors about Marvel's premier supernatural team, the Midnight Suns, joining the franchise after the end of the Multiverse Saga remain. Ghost Rider would be the perfect character to be among the team's most important members. The fact that Sacha Baron Cohen debuted as Mephisto in Ironheart would also make him a fitting villain for a team project.

As for Ghost Rider himself, we learned earlier in 2026 who will play him, as Project Hail Mary star Ryan Gosling will lead the MCU's Ghost Rider movie. The project will be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy, with a release set for July 28, 2028. Gosling's new Ghost Rider movie confirms that the franchise is moving on from the MCU's first Ghost Rider as the character's canon status remains murky.

Two Ghost Riders Already Exist In The MCU

Gabriel Luna's Robbie Reyes transforms into Ghost Rider wearing a leather jacket in Agents of SHIELD

Before Gosling's Ghost Rider leads his MCU movie in 2028, Marvel fans were already treated to two versions of the comic book character through Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. No, none of them were Nicolas Cage's Johnny Blaze from the 2000s movie franchise, though Ryan Reynolds thought about getting the actor to return through the multiverse in Deadpool & Wolverine, which did not end up happening. In Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4's premiere, The Last of Us star Gabriel Luna made his debut as Robbie Reyes, one of the multiple characters who have carried the Ghost Rider flaming skull in Marvel Comics.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 deeply explored Ghost Rider lore, not only delving into Robbie's personal life, including his brother Gabe, played by Lorenzo James Henrie, but also featuring another major iteration of the character. As Robbie recounts his origin story, viewers watch as an unnamed Ghost Rider, seen riding a motorcycle and sporting a black leather jacket, passes the spirit of Vengeance onto him. While he was not named, that was the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider, played by stand-in Tom McComas. While we don't know now whether Gosling is Blaze or Danny Ketch in the MCU movie, there is a strong chance that history is not moving over.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Is Still The Elephant In Marvel's Canon

Playing against Luna's Robbie Reyes and his origin story tied to Johnny Blaze is the fact that Marvel Studios has yet to recognize Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. as MCU canon. The shared universe has since done so for the TV shows that were part of Netflix's The Defenders Saga, such as Charlie Cox's Daredevil, bringing back many of the characters in that corner of the franchise on Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again.

Despite the fact that Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and other MCU characters appeared in the show, let alone how Clark Gregg led the superhero series as Phil Coulson, Marvel Studios has not officially deemed Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. MCU canon. As such, with the most likely candidate for the character Gosling is playing in the MCU's Ghost Rider movie being the iconic Johnny Blaze version of the hero, the film will likely forget the character's established past in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., though the upcoming Marvel spy thriller series Zodiac teases an Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. connection in some form.
